Townsend recruits Sophia as a spy. She is sent into a mansion as a housemaid. Mr. Townsend thought she would make a great spy because she can read and that did help Sophia gain information since her job was the clean John Andre’s office. He left letters about the war in his office and that is where Sophia got most of the information. She takes a long trip, on foot, up to continue her spying on John Andre.

Nathan Hale, for example, is an American soldier and spy during the American Revolution who was captured by British soldiers. To begin with, Reverend Hale thought that he has authority due to his incredible power of finding and curing spiritual problems. In the story, people of Salem think that Betty has witchcraft. In order to figure out, the community calls, Reverend Hale, “spiritual doctor”, so he can examine Betty, Parris’s daughter, for witchcraft symptoms or a cure to a spiritual problem. A dynamic, or round, character is a major character that encounters conflict and is changed by it. Reverend Hale is a dynamic character, he undergoes a dynamic change throughout the play. Based on his transformation, Hale truly is a good man. In Act 1, Hale arrived in Salem to fix a "spiritual problem." He believed witchcraft to be very true and very prevalent in the area.
Towards the end, Hale changes from a person who carries his heavy written laws to a person who hates the court. During Act III, after Danforth arrested Proctor, Hale is so angry with the court that he yells, "I denounce these proceedings, I quit this court!” (Act 3, 120). The quote might seem really simple, but it is significant because Hale finally figures out that the court system is a failure to the society, and also figures out what he should be go after. In Salem, greed allows the personal agendas of some people to conflict with the good intentions of many of the other citizens. “Character Analysis over The Crucible” Arthur Miller is a commonly-known playwright, most famous for his 1953 play, The Crucible. The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. However, Miller made a few alterations to the historical members of the Salem society in order to suit his dramatic purpose in The Crucible, particularly Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Samuel Parris.

The definition of morality is the principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad (Webster 1). In stories, characters have varied moralities like; John Proctor and Judge Danforth, Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams, and Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller uses the characters to show how one's morality can be skewed because of the pressure and influence of society. John Proctor and Judge Danforth exemplify the difference of innocence in morality. Proctor is a well-liked man who has a distinct personality for himself (C. Lacovetti 1).
No matter how relentless someone can be, acts of atrocity in moments of hysteria can have a large impact on them. This impact can make them change their habits of practice and perception of what is right and wrong. A change in a character’s view of his role could be for better or worse, and on some occasions multiple changes can occur. In the novel, The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, Reverend John Hale is introduced as a methodical and precise authority figure. He is summoned to Salem to look over and help ascertain witchcraft in the supposedly afflicted girls.
In act 1 and 2 in the play ,The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the character Reverend Hale was introduced and learned what his role was. Reverend Hale was a man nearing his forties and was a high-status intellectual who was an expert in witchcraft (Miller 155). In this act Hale said that he believes there always will be someone with the devil(Miller 155). Hale was siding with the court in this act and signing death warrants along with believing in these accusations fully as shown in his visit to the Proctors when he said there is too much evidence to deny the Devil is in Salem (Miller 171). Also, Hale almost played as an interrogator when he was giving rapid fire questions to John about his Christian character and if he goes to church in his visit to the Proctor house (Miller 171).

Mr. Hale becomes the man who tries to help the wrongly accused after he realizes people are accusing others for fun.
