In any successful story the protagonist must go through a thorough change in which they see things and do things in a “new light.’ In The Crucible John Proctor, the protagonist starts off as adulterous deceiving man but as the story progresses he develops into a respectful, wise and intellectual character. Throughout The Crucible John Procter redevelops his relationship with his wife, his honesty with others in Salem, and his moral view of what is right and wrong. When John Procter and his wife are first introduced into the story there seems to be a discerning fervor between the two “love birds” in the story. Especially when Elizabeth is questioned by John on why she feels sad the stage directions say that “She [Elizabeth] doesn’t want friction and yet she must” (Miller 166).
In 1692 in a little town called Salem, Witch trials were performed some innocent people were hanged and others were falsely accused of performing witchcraft. In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, there was a couple that lived in Salem Village. The couple’s names were John and Elizabeth Proctor they were a very distant couple. Some people have lost their lives because of using witchcraft, but some of those people that were innocent shouldn’t have lost their lives because they had nothing to die for meaning they doing right and they were protecting their loved ones.

The reader learns that Proctors marriage is not in the best place at the moment through the discrepancy between what John Proctor does before he sees his wife and when he talks to her. Miller illustrates in his stage directions, “He is not quite pleased. He…takes a pinch of salt, and drops it into the pot,” (49). Here, the reader can understand he is not pleased with his wife’s cooking, however, he fixes it to his liking and then compliments her at dinner. He is not honest with Elizabeth because he is trying to please her and not add any more problems to their marriage.
This secret was his affair with Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams was trying to get rid of Elizabeth, because she wanted to take over her spot as John Proctors wife. Due to Abigail's jealousy and revenge for Elizabeth she mentions Elizabeth's name during the Salem witch trials which causes nothing but chaos. During this chaos, John Proctor displayed traits of being short tempered and aggressive. She also states that it is impossible to give up her love for him and that she will accept Proctor no matter what sin he commits. This scene from The Crucible reveals how the characters judge one another by their past relationships and interactions to bring out the quality of arrogance. In the beginning of the scene, Abigail moves closer and compliments Proctor because she has a desire to be with him.

It says a lot about Proctor’s personality, it gives the reader look into Proctor’s scandalous lifestyle. It also sets up the story’s theme of love being more enduring than lust.
