“Let you look for the goodness in me, and judge me not.” John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth Proctor both endure a crucible or severe moral test. Elizabeth is put to the test various times during the play including when she was asked if her husband is a adulterer. John Proctor makes the descion to admit he had relations with Abigail williams.
In any successful story the protagonist must go through a thorough change in which they see things and do things in a “new light.’ In The Crucible John Proctor, the protagonist starts off as adulterous deceiving man but as the story progresses he develops into a respectful, wise and intellectual character. Throughout The Crucible John Procter redevelops his relationship with his wife, his honesty with others in Salem, and his moral view of what is right and wrong. When John Procter and his wife are first introduced into the story there seems to be a discerning fervor between the two “love birds” in the story. Especially when Elizabeth is questioned by John on why she feels sad the stage directions say that “She [Elizabeth] doesn’t want friction and yet she must” (Miller 166).
In 1692 in a little town called Salem, Witch trials were performed some innocent people were hanged and others were falsely accused of performing witchcraft. In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, there was a couple that lived in Salem Village. The couple’s names were John and Elizabeth Proctor they were a very distant couple. Some people have lost their lives because of using witchcraft, but some of those people that were innocent shouldn’t have lost their lives because they had nothing to die for meaning they doing right and they were protecting their loved ones.
In the Crucible, Arthur Miller uses the characterization of Elizabeth Proctor to portray that once a person’s trust is broken, it can never be gained back fully. For example, when John Proctor came home to his wife, Elizabeth, he “gets up, goes to her, kisses her. She receives it.” (48) Miller uses this as indirect characterization, as Elizabeth only receives his kiss instead of kissing her husband back. She knows that he had an affair with Abigail, so Elizabeth still does not trust him completely.
The conversation between them shows the reader Elizabeth still does not trust her husband. She questions her husband and is suspicious about his actions and is still hurting from Proctors infidelity (Miller 49-50). Miller’s use of dialogue is effective in the first two pages of this scene in showing the rift between the couple. Through their conversation, it is evident their marriage has not yet
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams and John Proctor are known to have had an adulterous affair with one another. Even though both John Proctor and Abigail are worthy of blame for their actions, Abigail is the most culpable of the two. In The Crucible, Abigail is the most to blame because of her “tempting” Proctor to carrying out the act more. During Act 1, Abigail is shown to keep egging on Proctor although he does not want to have the affair with her anymore.
This secret was his affair with Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams was trying to get rid of Elizabeth, because she wanted to take over her spot as John Proctors wife. Due to Abigail's jealousy and revenge for Elizabeth she mentions Elizabeth's name during the Salem witch trials which causes nothing but chaos. During this chaos, John Proctor displayed traits of being short tempered and aggressive. The Relationship Between Proctor and Abigail #2 John Proctor and Abigail Williams have a very complicated relationship, that heavily influences the events throughout the play, The Crucible. Without these few events, the witch trials may have never begun. But what were these few events? For one, Abigail and Proctor had an affair. Abigail was a house maid for Elizabeth and John Proctor.
In The Crucible, the protagonist John Proctor was. In the town of Salem, in 1692, a group of young ladies by the names of Betty Williams, Abigail Williams and Tituba were found dancing in the forest naked by Reverend Parris, Abigail’s’ uncle. Reverend Parris assumed that they were participating in witchcraft. This idea of witchcraft spread through the city of Salem and the citizens began accusing each other of being witches. This started a series of court cases known as the Salem Witch Trials.
Proctor then states that there was never a relationship to begin with and she should let go of her hopes. Abigail yells in tears at Proctor stating that he has loved her and convinced her that they were in love. She also states that it is impossible to give up her love for him and that she will accept Proctor no matter what sin he commits. This scene from The Crucible reveals how the characters judge one another by their past relationships and interactions to bring out the quality of arrogance. In the beginning of the scene, Abigail moves closer and compliments Proctor because she has a desire to be with him.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a novel that describes events that happened in Salem, Massachusetts 1962, these events were called the Salem witch trials. Two important people in the story were John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth Proctor, they were farmers that lived on the outskirts of the town, and they lived with their three sons and their servant Mary Warren. John and Elizabeth are important to the story because they are both accused of witchcraft but they are the only ones who know that the girls that are accusing people are just doing it for attention. John is a caring stubborn man who loves his wife even though she does not fully see it while Elizabeth loves her husband but doesn’t trust his word as much as she used to because of things that happened in the past.
John Proctor’s words towards Elizabeth signal irritation and annoyance. John Proctor, the main character of The Crucible, has an affair with a much younger girl, Abigail Williams, breaking his wife, Elizabeth’s trust in him. Her suspicion of him rises when he tells her he was in a room alone with Abigail. Elizabeth’s growing mistrust begins to aggravate John, which is revealed when he says, “I’ll not have your suspicion any more” (489). Elizabeth is doubtful after learning about John’s affair with Abigail and her lack of trust in her husband begins to anger him.
A lot of what John Proctor does in The Crucible is to save his wife Elizabeth. When John Proctor says, "I will bring you home. I will bring you soon."(Miller 77) he promises to save his wife from being hanged for witchcraft. This also shows John’s love for his wife, Elizabeth, and his choosing of this love over his lust for Abigail.
