Did you know that Christians in the middle ages were so dedicated to their religion that they held a children's crusade to take down the enemy that actual soldiers couldn’t defeat? That is just how dedicated people can be to their religion. I do not entirely blame them, in the middle ages religion was the one thing people can look forward to in life so it would just make sense that religious devotion, and the paradise of Heaven is what the religions were fighting for during the Crusades. The Crusades was a war between the Christians and Muslims during Europe's middle ages that is often viewed as a holy war, however some people are beginning to believe it was more about money or land. Yes, it is true that people on the east sometimes left for this reason, it is for sure not the main cause. A great example of the opposing sides argument is found in document 3 when it suggests, “For those who were poor there, here God makes rich. Those who had few coins, here possess countless besants, and those who had no villa, here by the gift of God, already possess a city.” People who leave the east of the west could easily gain riches, which is for political and economic gain, but they believed that God gave them those riches, and that God gave them a better life. This means that the motivation is still coming from religion. Another example of what the other side belief is that Saladin and the Pope never truly cared about Jerusalem, and just wanted to expand their territory, because land equals power. In document 4 it states “Now God has received merit of its recovery for one house, the house of the sons of Ayyub, in order to unite all hearts in appreciation of its members.” When people read this they believe that Saladen only wanted Jerosalm back so he could own it, however similar to the first quote, as long as he believes God had received merit, it is still about religion.
