General Zaroff challenged Rainsford by saying, “I’ll cheerfully acknowledge myself defeated if I do not find you by the third day.” So, Rainsford accepted the challenge, and on the third day, he fooled the General by swimming back to the house and hiding behind the bed curtain. When General Zaroff went to his room, to sleep, Rainsford surprised him and
He then wondered what to do from there and decided to jump into the sea and swim along the shore to Zaroff’s house. He had been swimming away from the hounds and soon made it to Zaroff’s bedroom to hide and waiting for him to arrive. Zaroff then finished eating and came upstairs. He went to the window then found Rainsford in the curtains and he was shocked to see him there. Zaroff then congratulated Rainsford and “Zaroff said with a deep bow, One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds.
Zaroff had this theory that Rainsford was trying to kill him and he was right but for a good reason. Rainsford walked up to the
Zaroff reveals that he intends to hunt Rainsford, since he finds hunting
Instead of being fearful and wanting to give up, Rainsford became zealous; a fearless survivor. “ Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leapt far out into the sea.”
After he learned what General Zaroff was hunting and retired for the night, “He was tired in every fiber of his being, but nevertheless Rainsford could not quiet his brain with the opiate of sleep. He lay, eyes wide open” (104). This action shows how he was very afraid of the events that lay ahead of him. The way Rainsford reacted showed he was very afraid of being hunted. Throughout the story Rainsford demonstrates being determined quite a bit.
One of us will be a meal for the dogs. The other will sleep in this excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford. He never slept in a better bed, Rainsford thought later.” Therefore Rainsford accomplished his goal of surviving while on the island because he trusted in himself and had faith that he could kill
Meaning Zaroff got fed to the hounds and Rainsford got to sleep in the bed. The fight and Rainsford winning, indicates that Rainsford is going to think and act similarly to Zaroff because he might have gotten the thrill of killing humans. This shows a lack of humanity because Rainsford may become like Zaroff and start killing humans for entertainment. Rainsford might lose empathy for humans and start to devalue human life which leads to abandoning his moral compass. At the beginning of the book, Rainsford said that he thinks what Zaroff is doing is murder.
When Reinsford escapes the general through the swamp and stabs Ivan using a trap, he quickly finds himself running out of options. The dogs and General Zoroff were running right behind Rainsford and he had no more cards to use. “Across a cove, he could see the gloomy gray stone of the chateau. Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated.
“Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea…” (235). Again, Rainsford had to reason with himself. When he heard the pounding paws of the pack and the heavy breathing of the general, he knew that he would have to jump.
When placed in this situation, Rainsford has transformed from being the hunter to becoming the huntee, and is now in the position of all the animals he has carelessly killed before. Towards the end of the story, while Rainsford is being hunted by Zaroff and his pack of dogs, the narrator describes how Rainsford feels by saying that: “Rainsford now knew how an animal at bay feels” (22). The sensation of extreme fear and worry had finally gotten to him, and he can relate to how the animals he hunt may
