One of the biggest reasons Rome fell is because the military. The military started to become sluggish and weak. Since this happened soldiers fought the goths without any protection for their chests and heads (doc B.) This made it so soldiers were easily killed in battle by archers. Adding on to that Soldiers were exposed to wounds because they have no armour so they would think about running and not fighting (doc B.) Senators, bureaucrats, clergymen, cooks, bakers, and slaves all avoided the draft not giving enough people into to military (doc B.)
[to] areas like the Mediterranean, where no resistance had been established..... The population of Rome decreased from a million people to 250,000”(Document F). Empire’s population decreased, thus leaving Rome with an even smaller army and closer to its “fall”. To sum up, Rome lost most of its citizens to natural disasters and
The first reason the Dark Ages were not as dark as the name claims for them to be, is because during the Dark Ages there were tons of advances in education. The information in Doc A that claims “Europe suffered a decline in commerce and manufacturing, in education, in literature and the arts and in almost all that makes possible a high civilization.” is completely biased. And that the Dark Ages “Did not support learning” (Background Information) which is completely untrue. During the Dark Ages, there were still people learning and teaching. One of them being a monk named Richer, who “went to the town of Chartres, in what is today France, to study.”
Europe in Dark Age Before you say “Europe was never in a dark age.” think of the middle ages right after the fall of Rome, in The Crusades or The Black Death. These are just examples of why Europe was in a dark age. The phrase dark age means unsightly and dreadful, the term comes from Francesco Petrarch, he was an Italian scholar who compared Europe to Asia. The dark ages lasted 500 AD to 1500 AD.
There were many different causes for the fall of the Roman empire, not just one. The Roman Empire was very strong, but eventually broke down over time for a multitude of reasons. Most of those reasons had to do with changes in Rome’s identity. Some of these changes in Rome’s identity led to the fall of Rome because they were so sudden; only portions of the Roman population were prepared for the change. Other times, citizens got into arguments because they were, in a way, too prepared.
The number of people who died in natural disasters and from fighting without armor was a huge blow to the Roman Empire. Along with the natural disasters, there was disease that swept the empire, causing even more deaths and a massive decline in the amount of people fit to fight for Rome. “A series of plagues that swept the empire… which brought diseases [from] southern Asia to new areas like the Mediterranean, where no resistance had been established even to contagions such as measles. The resulting diseases decimated the population. The population of Rome decreased from a million people to 250,000.”(Document F).
Many labels were used to characterize the Middle Ages, however the best were The Dark Ages, The Age of Feudalism, and The Age of Faith. The Dark Ages accurately identifies the Middle Ages because of all the death, destruction, and plague throughout. The Middle Ages followed the decline of the Roman Empire, which causes very harsh times across Europe. Also this time period consists of the plague which virtually slaughters one-third of Europe.
This was a result of the constant invasions from the Vikings, Muslims, and Magyars; kings couldn't defend their lands and people no longer looked to a central ruler for security (Doc 7). The Northmen, Vikings, plundered, then burned, towns; most of Europe was an easy target after Rome fell. Also, Charlemagne's three feuding grandsons broke apart Europe and defense became weak (Doc 8). The following reasons support the Dark Ages as being the best label to describe the medieval
This loss of population made it hard to find laborers and soldiers for war. This caused the empire to pay Germanic soldiers to fight for them. The need to pay for troops created a large debt for the Romans. Another reason that led to the decline of the Roman Empire was their water source coming in through lead pipes. Many people believed this poisoned the Romans which also led to low population.
The Dark Ages consisted of invasion, and loss of trade and government. “The barbarians have broken through the ramparts. The Saracen [Moors] invasions have spread in successive waves over the South. There is no longer any trade, only unceasing terror...society has no longer any government,” (Doc. 1). These problems led to the decline and therefore this period of time was named the Dark Ages.
Causes of Rome’s Decline The Roman Empire was the greatest civilization the world had ever seen, it lasted over than a semi-millennium. For a such great, undefeatable Empire to collapse, there should be many powerful causes. There is an endless debate among historians about the different causes that led to this decline moreover, they couldn’t agree on the most influential factors. In this essay, these different causes will be explored and try to find the direct causes of this decline.
Some say yes, some no. But I believe that the Dark Ages were maybe so dark. People have different opinions about the Dark Age.
How did Rome come from a scattered group of people to a huge empire and how did it have fall Body: Rome rose form a scattered group of people to a successful republic but how did they do it? well they began by overthrowing the Etruscan King The transition from the Etruscan monarchy to republic (510-509 BC) was not a easy change. In place of the King, the new Republic relied upon its Senate to oversee the government and the election of various officials, including two shared power Consuls. This transformation from monarchy to representative style government, headed by the elite social class, would prove to have troubles of its own.
The Roman Empire was one of the strongest, most dominant and most dynamic in the world. Rome started off as a city and due to the city’s accomplishments it lead to become an Empire. The Roman Empire was established in 27 B.C. Even after being such an overpowering Empire, there were different factors that made the Roman Empire fall apart. The Roman Empire fell in A.D 476. It took a lot of time for the Roman Empire to fall, as it took long to build such a spectacular Empire.
This time would be difficult for citizens as Rome began to fall. Expansion became the enemy of Rome because they couldn’t keep all of the cities in
