Introduction
Illness and disease are ubiquitous in human existence and express themselves in a myriad of forms. Despite all the different methods, techniques, and procedures created to prevent and cure ailments, disease always rears its ugly head. Regardless of the health of the individual or amount of medical procedures, all life will end in death. This is a fact seen in every aspect of human reality. Tolstoy, in his story of The Death of Ivan Ilych, discusses the inevitability of death and the issues surrounding it (Tolstoy, 1886). It involves the physical and tangible environment that can be touched, seen, tasted, and felt (Shelly, 2006). It is quantifiable and able to be measured (Shelly, 2006). This is primarily what the nurses and doctors and other medical healthcare professionals analyze and assess. However, this is only one portion of the healing environment. If patients were only treated for seen things, this could significantly limit their quality of care. To relat this to Tolstoy’s story, the example of treatment would be seen when Gerasim helps Ivan with his legs (Tolstoy, 1886). This is purely a physical level of care and only one part of the overall healing process. The phenomenology from a patient would include their signs and symptoms of their disease or illness in the seen world. From the time I was young, I have always been treated in both the seen and storied environments, but care in the unseen has been lacking. My own mind views things in the seen world which colors my mindset with only physical condition and not internal ailments. My storied environment has been greatly emphasized due to my background and belief in Christ. God has plan for us all and that is my story. However, when it comes to the unseen portions of health and healing, I am strangely uneducated. Parents or doctors have not treated my mind and I believe this could have benefited injuries in order to help me recover faster and in better ways.
