The early twentieth century was not a pleasant time for African Americans; they didn’t have many rights and they lost any gain that they made from their huge positive influence in the Civil War. Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois both saw all the issues that African Americans faced, and they both had the same goal: success for blacks in America. Washington’s approach was to accept the social inequality but in return get equal economics as whites. Du Bois wanted a more aggressive approach and wanted both social and economic equality, and he was hostile towards Washington because he didn’t demand social equality. In the time period, African Americans who demanded their social and economic rights sided with Du Bois because he would provide them the leadership to gain rights equal to whites.
In the essay “Notes of a Native Son” by James Baldwin, he expresses feelings of hate and despair towards his father. His father died when James was 19 years old from tuberculosis; it just so happens that his funeral was on the day of the Harlem Riot of 1943. Baldwin explains that his father isn’t fond of white people due to the racist past. He recalls a time when a white teacher brought him to a theater and that caused nothing but upset with his father, even though it was a kind act. Many events happened to Baldwin as a result of segregation, including a time where a waitress refused to serve him due to his skin color and Baldwin threw a pitcher of water at her.
Two historically great leaders with two opposite views, both Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois have made their voices heard on topics related to black social and fiscal advancement. Booker T. Washington encouraged African Americans to accept discrimination, while focusing on self-gains. W.E.B Du Bois on the other hand, pushed for African Americans to take a stand and petition for what they wanted. These two pronounced leaders’ claims were based on several assumptions, in which they supported with evidence in trying to reach and touch the listening ears. Booker T. Washington’s philosophy towards African Americans and the way they should deal with racism and discrimination may too many seem a morsel unorthodox.

From the beginning of America there has always been a racial problem that everyone is able to see (that they neglect it is another story). However, there is few talk about the class differences within a race. This is a struggle that many African Americans must face in America. The film Two Nations of Black America, the novel, Sarah Phillips, by Andrea Lee, and the memoir by Margo Jefferson, Negroland, can depict how we as a nation have failed the lower class but also how we as a higher class have failed the lower black class.
In order to affect positive change in the country, the people need to rebel against the past and develop a new way of thinking. Baldwin believes poverty in general stems from the government’s failure to improve society. The land of opportunity is only accountable to a select few of individuals and therefore cannot be a standard for the entirety of the nation. Baldwin acknowledges the existence of Black and White poverty, but in a way he is signifying white poverty do not experience the same caliber of social suffering as those of blacks. He is certainly correct in the fact that black individuals are subjected to immediate discrimination because of the color of their skin. Baldwin believed public housings were an insult because the infrastructures demonstrate people of African-decent as meaningless and less than human.
In A Letter to My Nephew, James Baldwin, the now deceased critically acclaimed writer, pens a message to his nephew, also named James. This letter is meant to serve as a caution to him of the harsh realities of being black in the United States. With Baldwin 's rare usage of his nephew 's name in the writing, the letter does not only serve as a letter to his relative, but as a message to black youth that is still needed today. Baldwin wrote this letter at a time where his nephew was going through adolescence, a period where one leaves childhood and inches closer and closer to becoming an adult.
He has given out excellent points that lead him to his and he has used real life examples to posit the question. “ is this what a Negro American Dream looks like?” clearly, then Mr. Buckley acknowledge he could not fight the ethos of that argument and rather he focused on underestimating the credibility of Baldwin’s and not answering the debate questions.. Buckley wasted lots of time on fancy words and empty bombast before making his points. Mr. Baldwin was very relaxed, comfortable and delivers his speech slowly.
