I. Introduction The United States is founded on the concept of Liberty. As expressed in the Constitution, all United States citizens are entitled to the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These values have been endlessly challenged throughout history in an attempt to determine where freedom should end and where government regulation might begin.
No other word is more fundamental and has more meaning in describing what Americans are and their ideologies than freedom, but prior to Civil War, the real meaning of freedom had to be learned. Can a country be a free nation if not everyone is enjoying freedom? The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave shows that prior to the Civil War, slaves had no rights or freedom. The book Across Five Aprils shows that the issue of slavery was so big, that it was causing division among families, more important it torn the country apart. The Sullivan Ballou Letter helps us to appreciate that the government needed help to be united again and many were willing to give their own life to help to make the government strong.

For the citizens of America owning a car means being able to arrive at work from wherever they may live, despite the circumstances. In “America’s Key to Freedom” Carol Domblewski states that” They had mobility any time they wanted, not just when a train schedule said they had it.”
Freedom has been the central belief of America since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Since this day, America has worked hard to keep the idea that America is the “land of the free.” However, throughout the construction of this nation, freedom was defined differently by each person. Freedom to African Americans meant liberty from enslavement and land ownership. Freedom to Europeans meant freedom of religion and government.
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” is an inspiring short story following the life of a young husband, Mr. Goodman Brown, and the tragic event that made his life forever miserable. Set in Salem Massachusetts during the late 18th century, Hawthorne uses an abundance of symbols to represent his motifs for writing his story. Furthermore, “Young Goodman Brown” is ultimately a story demonstrating the internal struggle between good and evil, and the temptations each person faces. The first symbol heavily emphasized by the narrator is the Devil’s staff, which is described as “…a great black snake, so curiously wrought that it might almost be seen to twist and wriggle itself like a living serpent.” Likened to a snake or serpent, the

The amount of freedom that America gives to us goes mostly unnoticed in this country. The concept of freedom is extremely prominent in American culture. It is also debated so heavily to the point of controversy in our media, our workplaces, social circles, and even our homes. In this essay I will define the word “freedom,” related synonyms and contrast the term with antonyms and examples of negations. In American today, the people view their rights as one of the utmost important aspects of their lives. For example, they almost demand their freedom to worship as they choose. Although it is the people 's right to do this at times, it appears to be a bullying attitude. Our rights must suit our belief systems and cannot be varied away from them, or it would be against our rights. The people view freedom in America, as freedom of choice and not simply freedom as the Colonists did.
