The Dehumanization Of Poor People In The Media

438 Words2 Pages
Statistics help us to categorize and set values for human qualities, yet statistics seem so dehumanizing. Comparing human mind and nature to statistics is much like seeing a stunning cascade in a luscious forest and only looking at the water quality, it just doesn’t give it justice. Yet in the media today that is how poor people are portrayed, as cold hard facts. When the media depict the poor as just being a statistic, as being invisible, or as if they are completely responsible for their own situation, it destroys any empathy or passion for them making it steadily harder for them to find assistance. Admittedly, most people don’t like seeing the poor on television much like how people don’t like seeing sad commercials about animal abuse.
