Could you picture around 6 million people? Now how would you feel if all of them were killed right now? All of them being killed because they were African American or they were Mexican. The Holocaust was when the Nazi’s led by Adolf Hitler persecuted, tortured, and killed people just because they were Jewish. People were separated from their families and gassed or burned just to keep up with how many people were coming into the camp, or just to amuse themselves.
The author of The Devil’s Arithmetic is Jane Yolen. In this book the author uses excellent words to set the tone of the story, such as fierce, strong, nonsense, and ominously. The author also includes some German words and their translation. Raus, ‘raus, schneller, which means out, out, faster, is one example. There is many tones in this book.

Eventually, Hannah is taken to a concentration camp where not only her family is sacrificed, but so is her identity. The Devil's Arithmetic is a great presentation on how people’s identities are seized just as quickly as their family was. All people have an identity, but the Nazi’s believed otherwise.
Joel, the love of Hannah’s life found interest in another girl at school. Because they are not talking anymore, Hannah decides to stop coming to school for a few weeks. Knowing that he was the only person she cared for, he left her questionable and weak. The break up between them to brought Hannah to a very dark place. At this very moment Hannah felt that everyone was against her.
During her family’s Seder, she is transported to Poland during the time of the Holocaust. While not understanding how she got to another place and time, Hannah and her Polish family are taken to a concentration camp and must suffer through the misery and terror of being in the camp. Many people, her family and strangers, are “chosen” but the people who aren’t, listen to Hannah, who tells them stories of her home and other stories she knows to help keep the other prisoners’ spirits up. Hannah’s friend, Rivka, was chosen, so Hannah trades places with her so that she can live. We later find out that after Rivka survives the camp, she takes the name Eva, which is the name of Hannah’s Aunt.
As Hannah opens the door, she is transported to 1941 Poland and unknowingly becomes her Aunt Ava’s, formally known as Rivkah, cousin as she steps into the life of a prisoner in a German concentration
