(Hook) On July 6, 1942, the Frank family was forced to go into hiding in a secret annex after their oldest daughter, Margot, receives a letter to work at a concentration camp. (Bridge) Their youngest daughter, Anne, is an aspiring writer who has recently received a journal for her birthday on June 29, 1942, not even a month prior to her disappearance from society. (FS1) Anne Frank and her family were Jewish, living in a time period where it was illegal to be of that ethnicity and religion. (FS2) Anne decides to use her journal to document all of the events of the Annex, and what it was like to be an undercover Jew in such a dark period in history. (Rewording of MA) Despite how dark the stage of life a person may be in, light will shine, and the universe will work in their favor. (m1MA) Anne was in a very somber environment while living in the Annex. She was pegged with the fear that at any moment, her identity as a hidden Jewish girl would be brought to the light of the public. When the Annex was broken into by a robber, everyone had reached their breaking point. The members lived with paranoia and constant anxiety. In spite of this, Anne tried to be kind to everyone she met, and she lived everyday like it was her last. (m2MA) Anne conveys her message of kindness by claiming, “ The happiness in your heart can only be dimmed; it will always be there, as long as you live, to make you happy again” (198). Anne knew that at any moment she could die, yet she still presented herself with a smile. Instead of letting this paranoia make her a gloomy, miserable person, she had an epiphany that she could be a kind, happy person instead. Anne decided to be the life of the party, and cheer people up by making humorous jokes, or dressing up and imitating members of the Annex. (Rewording of MB) A small act of benevolence can personally touch an individual and make them feel of importance. (m1MB) Anne had many people in her life who did little acts of kindness that were of importance. Her “little helpers”, Bep, Mep, and Mr. Kugler, made Anne and the household’s lives a little better everyday. Anne’s helpers were non-Jews who were able to provide food, clothing, and supplies for the Annex members due to their status. They bought the Annex members ration books on the black market, and provided them with money.
