The migration of immigrants back then, were mainly because they wanted to find a better work experience. Some would even move to seek a new and improved religion. In the 1800-1880s, one of the main reasons immigrants moved, was because of the rising of taxes in their area which made them want to escape from that. Today, in modern day America, we still move in search for better jobs. Because the world has changed in so many ways, we constantly move, however, one of the main reasons is because of natural disasters that may have occurred in a particular area, which causes groups of families to move out of their old homes into a new location.
(Summer of 1879) As an African American wife who recently joined the western migration, along with my husband, I am optimistic about the opportunity we have to become landowners. Thanks to the new addition of the 13th amendment, my husband and I are considered lawful freedmen. We now have the right to live a lifestyle opposite of the suffering we endured back in the South.
Westward expansion resulted in Native Americans losing their native homelands and changing their culture to accommodate teachings from white settlers. Like the south, the West is a region wrapped in myths and stereotypes. The vast land west of the Mississippi River contains remarkable geographic extremes: majestic mountains, roaring rivers, searing deserts, sprawling grasslands, and dense forests. Since the first English settlers arrived at Jamestown in 1607, the story of America has been one of movement westward as more and more Europeans came to our shores, colonists spread further and further into what was called the frontier, which is defined as an area of unsettled land. We know, however, that America was already inhabited by Natives whose ancestors had arrived thousands of years earlier.
When we are facing with the natural disaster, all beings are suffering; nevertheless, we are still floundering in a sea of despair in order to be alive. During the 1930s, the Great Dust Bowl and the Great Depression caused lots of troubles in the world. Actually, “during the Dust Bowl years, the weather destroyed nearly all the crops farmers tried to grow on the Great Plains” (Farming in the 1930s. n.d.).
Just like several other ethnic groups in the 1800s, poverty drove many Greeks to emigrate to America. In their home country, agriculture paid inadequately and was long, arduous work. And those already paltry conditions turned destitute for citizens when blight struck their crops. This caused a mass migration from Greece that began in the 1890s and lasted through the 1920s (Iliou, 2007). During that time, many people from Greece sailed to Ellis Island, in hopes of a better future.
Blooming the Industry, Because America is Iconic Like That From 1860 to 1900, America faced their second main industrial revolution that led to many great inventions and ideas. Factors such as mechanical production, a large influx of American immigrants and years of progressive leadership in office led to America's industrial growth from the years 1860-1900. Through the second industrial revolution, Americans had a rapid increase of machinery and railroads due to their economical and timely benefits. England, fascinated with the United States´ factory operations, sent a committee of businessmen in 1854 to visit American industries. The Englishmen who visited had written that, ¨everything that could be done to reduce labour in the movement
• Industrial cities grew due to the vast number of immigrants arriving from all over the world and industrial booming, which provided jobs to many arrived immigrants and the living American’s in the cities. Around 60 million immigrants arrived to America in between 1800’s t0 1900’s. Many were Chinese, Japanese and southern Europeans (also known as new immigrants).
The events that occurred in response to the Red Scare not only reveals that the government was willing to discriminate against non-native and non-democratic Americans as a form of protection, but shows that many natural-born Americans still believe in “America for Americans” from the 1800’s, causing nativism to return. In fact, immigration was now limited more than ever, especially since the need for unskilled labors greatly decreased due to the effects of World War I. In addition to all these various anti-immigrant feelings arising within society, the very first quota system was established and enforced by the government. Between 1880 and 1920 the United States acted like as huge magnet for immigrants. Previous immigrants came from western and northern Europe; they were often well educated, spoke English, and had useful skills. However by 1880, the trend of immigrants changed; they came from southern and eastern cities, lacked education, and were poor. Many of the immigrants came to America in hopes of a better life. They were seeking escape from such things as famine, land shortage, and religious or political persecution.
“Italian immigration hit a peak in the 1800’s totaling an astounding four million.” A great majority of these immigrants came from southern Italy. Political and economic oppressions dwindled resources for the southern Italian. Running out of opportunities many immigrated to America. Within America many faced similar struggles to that of home.
The Great Migration is one of the most useful trips the blacks have made. The Great Migration was a lot of colored people making a trip to the north to find a better environment to live in other than the south because they did not like it at all. They’re life there was a lot better than as it was in the south. It wasn’t as segregated as the south, they had a lot better life there in the south. They had much more freedom before in the south but in the north they colored could vote.
Some Americans believed that United States had the right to take land that belonged to others for their needs and that the “moral justification” for this was that God intended for the America to grow and expand this was named the “manifest destiny.” To the average white American migration to the west meant a better living for families. Our readings suggest that during the 1830s-1850s as a result of the possibility of gold and territory expansion land was vast which created economic opportunities this made moving westward appealing to farmers, ranchers, miners, teachers, servants and others. Families traveled by wagons at times in harsh conditions.
It really amazed me when I was reading the book about how fast people were coming to America to gain religious freedom, or were they. Was the rule of the pope causing the mass migration? There were five million immigrates that came to America between 1815, and 1860 (Koester, 2015 p. 90). During this time, the growth of Catholics was astonishing. This started to alarm the established religious groups to a point where the movement for anti-Catholics took hold.
The land that most people believe to be rightfully theirs, and theirs alone is an incorrect assumption. The land they live on was once home to many indigenous people and their descendants still live there to this day. The indigenous people consisted of the Corn People, the Olmeca, the Maya, the Tolteca, the Tarasco, who were also known as the Purepecha, and the Azteca. Each indigenous tribe had their own way of life with their own developments. Quite often the developments were very advanced for their time periods.
Mexican Immigration Since the formation of The United States of America, it has always been the country of immigrants, so the issues of immigration regulation processes are quite important. Today the main challenge for the country is the influx of Mexican migrants. No country in the world has given the United States so many immigrants, as Mexico. In fact, the migration of Mexicans to the United States originates from the late XIX century, when the development of agriculture and the construction of railroads in the southern United States demanded additional influx of cheap labor.
