Hyde’s represents the sinister, evil, parallel opposite of Jekyll, as he wishes only to do evil(“Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds, and clubbed him to the earth”)(Stephenson 43). Robert Stevenson uses his protagonist’s, Dr. Jekyll, person versus self conflict to illustrate this point. Throughout the text, the reader learns that Dr. Jekyll was born into good fortune and was well-respected in society. However, the reader learns that it was not enough for him. He craves irregularities and he seeks a way to experience both sides of his identity without harming his reputation, which leads him to immoral experiments that bring out Hyde. To be specific, Jekyll states the following, “Many a man would have even blazoned such irregularities as I was guilty of; but from the high views that I had set before me, I regarded and hid them with an almost morbid sense of shame” (Stevenson 55).
Overall, Stevenson’s presentation of the duality of man is conveyed by the relationship between Jekyll and Hyde because towards the end of the novel. Jekyll begins to realise that the schism which once caused them to despise one another, help them understand each other situation. Jekyll even begins to ‘pity’ Hyde toward the end of novel, praising his ‘love for life’ by calling it ‘wonderful’, as his creator he consequently acknowledges the condescending attitudes towards Hyde, unfairly for his appearance, however rightfully so for his actions. Moreover, like Darwin’s theory, Hyde could never be accepted into society, often being characterised as a ‘brute’. Additionally, Jekyll’s actions would be condemned by the Victorian readers, as he was
Stevenson shows human nature through Mr Hyde and DR.Jekyll. Dr Jekyll is perceived as a highly influential person he is also kind, educated and a very popular scientist. This is where the idea is shown as the other side to Mr Jekyll or Hyde is the cruel ugly vicious man he commits wild acts of violence against innocent people. He is the said to be the embodiment of ‘evilness’. The quote ‘the fugitive impressed his beholders’ the word fugitive shows he has a dark reputation that precedes him.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde centre upon a conception of human duality, they are easily viewed as an allegory about the good and evil rages within the individual. The question isn’t which one of them is superior, the question is whether or not good can be separated from evil, or whether the two are forever intertwined.
Through the story we can see that this story is based on humanity and desires, it shows those sins and ugly part that lurking beneath the surface, it gives us a worldview of the early 19s: the pressure of society and Glamorous appearance but ugly inside. Hyde, just like the sound of his name, it kind of represents the heavy spect of man which the Victorians felt the need to "hide", it shows that he have to hid in the society, and the inside of human beings, as Utterson once talked about his name,he said that : "Well, if he is Mr. Hyde, I will be Mr. Seek." ( form chapter 1) Through the book, we can tell that Dr. Jekyll is a man that full of goodness, as the book describes: he is the most well know goodman in the town. In the other
In the novel, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson explores the complexity of human nature. He uses characters and events in the novel to present his stance on the major theme: “man is not truly one, but truly two” (125). Branching from this major theme are many more specific views on the idea that human nature is divided into good and evil. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two very different people who occupy the same body. Human beings struggle with good and evil and Stevenson goes to the extreme to to show this relationship.
Jekyll and Hyde TCEA In the novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, the predominant archetypal theme is “good and evil exist in all humans, and we live our lives struggling with these two forces.” This theme describes the duality of good and evil in Dr. Jekyll—the good being Jekyll and bad being Hyde— and the struggle he has with both sides fighting for dominance within himself. The emotional mindset and the physical attributes of Jekyll and Hyde show the good and evil within themselves.
So, perhaps Jekyll’s experiment reduces his being to its most basic form, in which evil runs freely without his reputation as Jekyll being tarnished at all. Jekyll and Hyde are not the only examples of duality in this novel. The city of London is also portrayed in contrasting terms as both a foggy, dreary and ‘nightmarish’ place, and a well kept, bustling center of commerce. Indeed, just as men have both positive and negative qualities, so does society.
Mr. Hyde has a very abominable appearance. He was the ugliest creature someone could look at. In the novel it was said that when he looked at a person it gave them a sinister feeling. Dr. Jekyll was a more collected individual who people liked. The doctor was an
The characters Utterson, Jekyll, and Hyde represent Freud’s theory. This story is very entertaining, but it has a meaning behind it. The meaning behind it is that people personalites can be all different. They can either be sweet, mean, or a good balance of both. The personaitys determined how the story turned out.
Jekyll clearly demonstrates the Persona, or the archetype of society’s expectations. He is well established in the community and known for his decency and charitable work. After Mr. Hyde’s murder act, Dr. Jekyll embraces an extremely moral and religious lifestyle. “He came out of his seclusion, renewed relations with his friends, became once more their familiar guest and entertainer; and whilst he had always been known for charities, he was now no less distinguished for religion” . The explanation for Dr. Jekyll’s new belief system is his progress of individuation even when he has not fully accomplished the state of wholeness jet.
