A Novel Worth Reading The three most important elements life has to offer for the Duck Commander Family:Faith, Family, and Ducks. The Duck Commander Family, written by Willie and Korie Robertson, is a novel about all three elements. Written in first person, Willie Robertson and his wife, Korie, give the reader insight to the greatness that came from small beginnings: Duck Commander Worldwide. The novel is written well; the authors focus on one event in time at a time. The emotion in the book is easy to feel because we are reading about their personal experiences. One thing I did not love about the novel was that sometimes it was hard to tell which author was the one writing at that time.
Growing up, Willie explains the abnormalities or challenges that came with being a Robertson. Phil had been an alcoholic; he had gotten so bad his family was almost ripped apart. In an attempt to bringing in more income, Phil opened a bar where he was the bartender and cook. Phil’s sister was so concerned about his drinking that she had brought in a preacher to talk to Phil and try to move him toward the word of God. Poor as dirt, the Robertson boys never grew up with that outlook on their situation. “When I started kindergarten, we received free lunches because our family didn’t have any money. I thought everybody was on free lunch; I didn’t even realize we were poor” (Robertson 44-45). Willie explains in this quote that the thought of being poor never crossed his mind. Another quote to show the character of the Robertson family is, “No matter how little we had, we always had room to set out one more plate” (Robertson 3). Even if they had struggled to bring in some food for their own family, whenever someone came their way looking for a meal, they were never shot
