People's view of things will always differ. From Ancient Greece to 20th century America, writers' opinions of Odysseus in The Odyssey have varied vastly. In Homer's The Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as the most heroic person in the book, yet in Dorothy Parker's poem "Penelope", which shares Penelope's perspective of Odysseus' journey, Parker approaches Penelope's exasperation with only Odysseus being entitled "brave". The attitude towards Odysseus in Homer's The Odyssey and Parker's "Penelope" is very different, and this is shown through the epithets and adverbs the poets use to describe Odysseus and his actions.
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.
So the wretched stranger finally revealed his true colors. With weapons at hand facing only our bare fists, he ingressed our leader, Antinous square in the throat. As his body lay limp, we scoured our surroundings however, our arms were not there. We believed this to be a trap, however, our faces went white in horror when the stranger spoke the words “You reckless fools shall pay for trespassing.” Frantically we prayed, prayed that our comrade’s death was a calamity, but to no avail, as Odysseus it was.

After being at war for 10 years, Odysseus and his crew go on a long journey to reach Ithaca. The author lets readers experience Odysseus’ good and bad traits. In The Odyssey, Odysseus showcases determination, patience, and loyalty. Even though Odysseus has these traits, he is also untrustworthy and a poor communicator.

Characters like Odysseus seem to survive best when thrust into this challenging world full of tribulations and trials. Some of the key characteristics that help him to do so include his cunning, attractiveness, and powers of persuasion. These traits allow a mortal man to mingle in the affairs of gods, as demonstrated by Odysseus's interactions with Circe, Calypso, and Athena.

Around the beginning of Odysseus’ journey home after the war, Odysseus decides to take a detour to the home of a cyclops deciding to not listen to his men’s suggestions to leave while they still could; consequently, it does not end well: “Ah, how sound that was, Yet I refused. I wished to see the caveman, what he had to offer no pretty sight it turned out, for my friend” (9.130-132). This thought by Odysseus shows that he realized his decision to go to the mysterious island wasn’t the most rational one and that his men’s pleas to leave were the better option, but he decides to be stubborn and place his curiosity before his men’s safety resulting in a non-heroic

Some may say that Odysseus’s positive attributes, such as his strength, and his negative attributes, like his tendency to fall into temptations, make up his heroic stature. However, Odysseus’s heroic stature is mainly dependent on the gods. Countless times in The Odyssey by Homer, the fate of Odysseus depends on the gods.
In the epic story the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is returning from the Trojan war, and on his way home he finds many obstacles ahead of him. Odysseus is the ruler of Ithaca and he is trying to return home to his land. Many creatures try and stop him from achieving his goal of returning home, but he and his crew have to push through and get home. Odysseus portrays bravery and courage leading his crew through these tough challenges. Odysseus heroically leads his crew and himself through dangerous obstacles, but also foolishly endangers them during the journey home.
Odysseus is not an admirable character, he is egotistical, injudicious, and unbelievably pretentious. Odysseus may seem to be the perfect idol to have, who would not want to worship a undeniably tenacious human being slaying many monsters and conquering any women he desires. But that is the negative, conquering women? In the Odyssey, you may find yourself applauding Odysseus for his courageous actions and being able to overcome any task, no matter how problematic and challenging it may seem. However, you may also see the unfavorable qualities Odysseus possesses.
About the time Odysseus reached Ithaca, Polyphemus the cyclops Odysseus blinded is asking Poseidon, his father, a way to cure his blinded eye. Polyphemus asked, “Father, Poseidon, is there any way to get my eye back?” “Polyphemus, there is a way to cure your eye, but you must go through a long and harsh journey to get what you want,” Poseidon answers, “You must find a way to go to Circe’s palace and find a way to get her to help you on your quest.” “That’s all I have to do?” Polyphemus said, “Thank you, Father.”
The Odyssey of Life Challenges happen in everyday life, and because these challenges are so personal to me, I sometimes forget that people have similar challenges or have had challenges like mine in the past. While reading the Odyssey by Homer, I was able to draw from the trials that Odysseus faced and how he overcame some of them. The trials that Odysseus faced and overcame are what made him who he was. In this way, I can see how my challenges in life have shaped me and will continue to shape me as I go through important times in my life.

He is overcoming challenges to return home to his wife penelope and his son Telemachus. Throughout the story major themes of loyalty, hospitality and vengeance are hidden within the plot.
