I attended a high school that is predominately of color, however, I don't remember a time when a teacher taught the students about systemic racism. So, I decided to take the matter into my own hands – I pressured my history teacher to talk about the issues that currently affect people of color. I recommended a book called "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander to be taught the last few weeks of school. Surprisingly, the teacher agreed to add the book to the curriculum. We talked about systemic racism, the school-to-prison pipeline, and the prison industrial complex.
Introduction Race and racism are uncomfortable topics, but ones that must be openly and honestly discussed in order to begin the process of change. This paper will review my background, analyze readings, and openly discuss how the readings relate to me. The readings will be Peggy McIntosh’s “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” Beverly Daniel Tatum’s “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” , Christopher Edmin’s “For White Folks who Teach in the Hood,” and Eduardo Bonilla-Silva’s “Racism without Racists.” Through these readings, I will define race, racism, white privilege, then I will reflect on how I identify with them and they affect education.
White male privilege versus everyone else has been a topic that covers so many different views and opinions stated about this topic. The white males of the society have the same powers females have in a way, but everyone else thinks differently. One example would be female teachers get paid less than men teachers do in society. We as one group believe that learning about white privilege is a process that will take some time. Also, we think that having everyone aware of what white privilege means and where is comes from is the first step to addressing the issue.
At my school, I am a co-leader of Sankofa, my school’s Black Awareness Club. We educate the student body on racial issues and have discussions about what it means to be black in our society. Throughout high school, I have helped this club grow from a few students to a flourishing space where students and teachers gather to better themselves and our school. After every event I feel progress being made. From the transformed way the members in my club interact in their community to the increasing number of curious new members, this club are advancing the presence of black students in my school.
Reading the article White Privilege, I was reflected back to the 2 past classes. I disagree with some of the article because I believe that women and black people can have the same amount of power as men and whites. The 2008 election showed no matter what skin color you have, anything is possible. On the other side, I see where it’s coming from. In our country, there’s still discrimination about women and blacks.

The more information I learn about this issue, the more surprised I am that our society still exhibits bias, because as much as the United States preaches about equality, it appears as if society has segregation in minor ways. Although the debate between whether there are biased questions on the SATs or not seems to favor that there aren’t by popular opinions, there is still biased behavior occurring in school systems that prevent certain groups of students from getting the proper resources needed. Because I would like to work in an low-income area, which most likely would contain minorities, as a teacher I would make the effort to help those students get the sufficient help needed. This motivates me to become a part of the education field, because caring teachers are much needed in area like this.
Newly learning that not all teachers operating with a liberal lens are doing what is best for low socioeconomic students is something that resonated with me. Research by Delpit (2006) goes on to describe how a White professor utilized the process approach. The approach meant students worked together in pairs and critiqued each other's work. From an outsider's perspective, this was the future of learning and acceptable. Collaboration is something I lacked during my years of primary and secondary school.

A major issue in this counties school system is the issue with busing students, with the biggest one being to change the schools from race assignment or income based. With the change being implemented the schools have become more segregated. North Carolina as a whole stopped using race based assignment plans in the late 1900s after a series of court cases struck down the practices in various settings around the country (Kemp, 2015).In 2000 Wake tried a new assignment policy that was based on income and achievement. This would make it so that no school would consist of more than 40 percent of the students receiving free or reduce lunch, nor more than 25 percent of students performing below grade level, the policy was voted to be ceased in 2010. Wake county school board is seeking to replace a policy which based on race, to a socioeconomic in regards to student placement.
The educational system in America contains numerous racial disparities that affects the very core of the children who is suppose to benefit from education. This disparity comes in many forms in primary schools, a teacher’s attitude being one of them (Epps, 1995). A teacher’s attitude in a classroom consisting of a racially diverse children is a large contributing factor to the academic success of their students, more specifically, the minority African American students. It is a given that all schools should employ qualified teacher who are passionate about their students and the quality of education they provide to these students. As we reach the 21st century we would think that racial inequality has completely ended yet we continue to see much discrimination. Racial inequality continues to exist in the world and here in the United States it is a very controversial topic. Today, we watch the television and almost everyday we hear news about some type of crime or situation which regards race issues. In other words, racism is still a topic that we experience in a daily basis and continues to haunt this country. By analyzing some recent racial inequality news we can find out what continues to make this issue such a controversial topic.
Something that I’ve learned from this course was the term “intersectionality” and how that plays into equity. While isolating an issue does help in understanding its roots, the next step we should be taking is to understand the interconnecting nature of social identities. This many help us to become a more equitable society. For example, when Chelsea facilitated the workshop where we touched upon intersectionality in the pay gap, we learned how both gender and racial identity can affect an individual’s wage. While white women earn $0.74 to a white man’s dollar, black women only make $0.64.

Racial integration of schools is well elaborated in the two articles by Pettigrew and Kirp. These two articles say that combination in the American schools since 1954 has unceremoniously ushered out the Brown versus Board of Education which was a decision made by the Supreme Court.
