Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Nuclear weaponry is the most devastating weapon mankind has ever used on itself. The only time they have been used is on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan by the United States of America during World War II. Atomic bombs were not necessary for the United States of America to win World War II. The atomic bombs should never have been used because of the damage caused by the large impact explosion, and radiation, which is worse than the initial explosion. These bombs were dropped because after the Nazis had surrendered in World War II, the Japanese did not accept the Potsdam Declaration, a surrendering agreement. This act was essentially America giving the allied powers, mostly Great Britain, weapons, ships, tanks, and artillery. The act stated that the Allied powers would have to return them when they were done. This was just a cover up so that americans who supported the Axis would not get mad. America and Japan did not have good relations before America entered the war so it was most likely going to happened at one point. “On December 7, 1941, 360 Japanese aircraft attacked the major U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, taking the Americans completely by surprise and claiming the lives of more than 2,300 troops”(History.com Staff). This was the deciding factor for America to join World War II. On December 8, 1941, Congress voted on whether or not America should join the war the vote was unanimous except for one vote(History.com Staff). The allied powers eventually beat Germany, who surrendered on May 8, 1945. The war was still not over. After many battles resulting in most of Japan being destroyed. Japan still did not accepted the terms of surrender the Allied powers offered. Thus, in early August, 1945, the United States of America used the first two Atomic weapons. The first surrendering agreement offered to Japan was unfair. Japan killed millions of Allied forces which angered them. For example, “Japan shall be permitted to maintain such industries as will sustain her economy and permit the exaction of just reparations in kind, but not those which would enable her to re-arm for war. To this end, access to, as distinguished from control of, raw materials shall be permitted. Eventual Japanese participation in world trade relations shall be permitted”(Potsdam Declaration | Birth of the Constitution of Japan), this term of the Potsdam declaration tells Japan they are not allowed to have any military. This was unfair because all countries should be allowed to protect themselves. Also, “The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku and such minor islands as we determine”(Potsdam Declaration | Birth of the Constitution of Japan), this part of the Declaration was cruel. The allies were taking almost a quarter of all of Japan's land. If the Potsdam Declaration was more just the Japanese might have surrendered saving over two hundred thousand people's lives from the atomic bombs and the radiation(Hiroshima and Nagasaki Death Toll).
