When I was little, I went to a party and there was a clown who had picked me up that made me afraid of them I am still afraid of clown’s to this day. In the story, “The Elevator” Martin is claustrophobic of elevators and scared of the fat lady, how I am scared of crowns. He could not get over his fears even if he tried. William Sleator, shows us Martin’s lack of ability to get over his fears by building suspense through Martin’s thoughts and actions which are all efforts to avoid his fears. Martin is claustrophobic of the elevator, paranoid of the fat lady. Martin is cared and does not trust the elevator, because he thinks of the worst things and could happen. “He was always uncomfortable in elevators, afraid that they would fall.”{line 4-5}. He did not trust the elevator his thoughts were that it would fall. He is thinking that because he gets nervous every time he gets in a elevator. “Would the elevator stop between floors? And if it did how would they get him out?”.{line 32-33}. He had all these questions and worrying about what would happen during the elevator ride. If he got stuck between the floors he would freak out and it would take a lot of time to get him out. Since he is already terrified he would most likely panic and scream. “I’m not worked up. It was just funny at the way she kept staring at me. You know how people never look at you in the elevator. Well she just kept looking at me.”{line 130-133}. He was uncomfortable about the fat lady just staring at him. Something did not seem right about her, because when he is in the elevator people do not stare at each other. “She was expecting him.
