Global warming is one of the biggest issues facing the world today. It causes many problems in the world. Storms are made stronger, the ocean levels rise, and hotter temperatures cause more frequent wildfires. The main cause of Global Warming is the greenhouse effect that carbon dioxide creates in the atmosphere, but there are many factors that contribute to the problem. There are critics of global warming that say the earth is fluctuating at a normal rate, but there are many things that prove its existence. People are responding to this problem. New York City is doing a lot to affect change. Everyone can reduce their carbon footprint by doing some simple things.

Fossil fuel power plants are probably the biggest cause of global warming. These power plants release huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This contributes to rising global temperatures. Deforestation of the rainforests is a major problem because to the planet, forests are like lungs. They produce a lot of oxygen and get rid of harmful carbon from the atmosphere. When the trees are cut down or burned they can no longer filter the carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Farm animals releasing methane is another factor that contributes to global warming. Farms cause methane to be released into the atmosphere because of the animals. Methane along with carbon dioxide contributes to rising temperatures by trapping heat. Vehicles also are a large contributor to the global warming problem. They burn fossil fuels, producing greenhouse gas emissions, which contributes to global warming. Processes of recovering fossil fuels are another problem causing global warming. Processes like mining, make the stored up carbon in the earth get released into the …show more content…

The melting of ice all around the globe is one of these signs. If enough ice melts the sea levels will rise dramatically. This will cause water to push inward on the coast and many coastal places will be under water, such as New York City and the entire state of florida. Many small islands are completely disappearing and the high tide on large islands is increasing dramatically. In the past 100 years the sea level has increased between 4 to 10 inches. By the end of this century it is predicted that the sea level will rise by 3 feet. The increase in average temperature is another large indicator of global warming. The average temperature around the world has increased about 1 degree which causes the ice caps to melt. The oceans have also increased in temperature which causes a significant increase in tropical storms. Another sign of global warming is the polar bear population has decreased drastically. Which is directly linked to the melting ice because they can’t get enough to eat. New York is one of the most energy efficient cities in the world. Many New York City cabs are green, they are hybrid cars that use less carbon dioxide. There are also hybrid electric busses that have less carbon dioxide emissions. Ellis island and the statue of liberty are run on wind power. All of these small differences help to drastically decrease New York City’s carbon
