The environment of the slum was really terrible, causing significant effect on the characters? personalities.
Violence:
At the beginning of the story, Stephen Crane, gave us a general idea of the environment in which Maggie grew up. Kids fought against each other along the street. Not for fun, but for true glory and survival. As a kid on one of those streets, Maggie?s brother, Jimmie knew how to force Maggie to listen to him. However, the violence of her family not only exist on her brother. Her father, especially like to solve problems with violence. By forcing his kids to listen to him, Dad easily found himself satisfaction. He hit Jimmie with a barrel simply because himself was drunk. Maggie played the role of persona as a good girl (Jiang Zhu P3).However, too sincere is what turn her down.In the story, Maggie fell in love with Pete because she thought Pete could bring her away from her terrible neighbourhood, to a place where they can drink and enjoy, rather fight for survival. By considering Pete a saver of her life, she failed to get her mind off from him and eventually was dumped. A vivid description was given in the story. It is very similar with people who are in the rural society. Kids try their best to eat as fast as they can so that they can ensure enough food for themselves. Jimmie eat ferociously despite his wound on his lips. Maggie would even check her shoulders, assuming somebody will suddenly appear and take her food. There was no rule in the family. If there was one, I was the rule of jungle. Their lives were guided by instincts, not
