The Ethical Dilemmas Of Mr. Hundert In The Palace Thief

In the story “The Palace Thief” Mr. Hundert is a teacher in the school who teaches partitions. His idea of teaching is to mold the students into becoming better people through his teachings of Julius Caesar. The character Mr. Hundert in the short story has to make decisions mostly regarding the Senator's son, Sedwick. When faced with these challenges he tries to show compassion and be a good teaching, however, his actions in doing so are viewed as unethical decisions. Mr.Hundert is unethical when he accepted a bribe from Sedgwick's father, the Senator. When Mr. Hundert goes to his father's office to talk about how Sedwick is doing in school, the Senator is quick to give him a rare gun for free. The Senator says, “‘You’re a history buss,’ he said, ‘right?’ ‘ Yes sir’ ‘Then take it it’s yours’ ‘No, sir. I couldn't’ ‘Take the damn thing’ ‘All right, I will’ “(pg 162). When Mr. Hundert states who he is the Senator quickly gives him the gun as a way to persuade him to leave. Accepting bribes is unethical as one is persuaded to act a certain way. Hundert is unethical is when asks a question in the contest to Sedwick that wasn’t on the study guide when the headmaster told him not to do anything about him. Senator Bell confronts him by saying, “‘ My son tells me you asked him a question that was not on the list, which the Oriental fellow knew the answer in advance. He feels you’ve been unfair, is all.’ “(pg 173). Mr. Hundert finds out his student, Sedgwick, was cheating during the competition. He goes to the headmaster to inform him a student was cheating, but he tells him to not do anything about it. This is ethical of him to inform the headmaster, however, he did not listen to the headmaster and gave him a question not on the study guide so he wouldn't cheat.
