Many individuals have heard about the popular Netflix original, Stranger Things, starring Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. This group of friends set out on a journey to find their missing friend, Will, who was abducted and taken into the Upside Down. Along their journey, they come across a young girl who goes by the name of Eleven. However, Eleven is not an average girl; she has special abilities which she uses to help her friends find Will and fight the creature. Nonetheless, Eleven has a very unique background story that raises a very crucial topic: human rights. According to the Belmont Report, “Two general rules have been formulated … (1) do not harm and (2) maximize possible benefits and minimize possible harms… an agreement to participate in research constitutes a valid consent only if voluntarily given. This element of informed consent requires conditions free of coercion and undue influence” (“The Belmont Report”). In relation to Eleven, Dr. Brenner maximized harm and there were no benefits. Instead, they caused her psychological trauma and torture by submerging her into the sensory deprivation tanks and forcing her to make contact with a creature that she was terrified of. Also, they tried to force her to kill an animal and tried to lock her in a cell. Additionally, she did not voluntarily sign up for these experiments; she was coerced by Dr. Brenner do these experiments in order to please him and receive a contorted form of affection. All in all, Stranger Things, is a Netflix original that adequately describes a human rights issue: torture. Although the torture is not readily seen, through careful and critical analysis, one is able to deduce that both Eleven and her biological mother, Terry Ives, endured a vast amount of psychological torture which is unethical and
