Mackenzie Schlegel Miss Given English Honors 5 February 1018 Poisonwood Bible Journal Entry #3 Storytelling is expressed all throughout this novel. Each narrator in the book has their own different views, thoughts and stories on what life is like in the Congo. All of the girls in the novel reacted to being at the Congo in different ways. For example, poor Rachel never wanted to be at the Congo from the start and neither did the other girls, but as time went on in the novel the other girls had their own experiences at the Congo. Ruth May was lucky enough to be able to conform to the Congo culture and lifestyle and was able to handle the diversity, unfortunately Leah’s experience was not the same. I believe the significance of the quote is to explain how a snake slithers through trees. The quote explains how they are always watching people. The quote also makes a reference about a daughter and a sister, which can be inferred it refers to Ruth May and as the quote references the word hungry I can not help but think of the Congo. Everyone in the Congo is hungry. This novel can be a political allegory because it discusses the Congo gaining independence from Belgium along with Patrice Lumumba getting assasinated. Another political allegory can be the diseases the people in the Congo endured such as malaria and malnutrition. The people in the Congo had malnutrition due to their lack of food resources. Many people often died from both malaria and malnutrition. I do not think that someone is always complicit on purpose. Sometimes peer pressure can get kids especially teenagers into trouble with the cops. For example, say your best friend invites you over to their house as well as a few other people and one of those people brings drugs. The thought going through your head is that they are bad for you and you are a good kid and want nothing to go with them, but by the peer pressure and by seeing the others around you do it, you have that fear and urge to try it too. It necessarily is not your fault for having urge to want to do the drugs because you may be scared they will make fun of you or tell you it is okay to do them. So with your friends convincing you it’s okay to do something illegal, you do it, but know after you use the drugs it was the worst decision in your life and then regret every minute of it. This shows how some people are not completely complicit on purpose there can be multiple reasons why someone gets involved with something bad and illegal without it being intentional. To relate this to the novel, the Congo situation would not of happened if Nathan would not have put them in the situation of agreeing to go there. If the Price family happened to not go to the Congo then Rachel would of never met Axelroot and they would of never got married, which is illegal in America. Also, Rachel would of never experienced
