The book The Faithful Spy takes place during World War II at the height of Hitler and his third reich. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the protagonist of the story, has hard circumstances during the war. He serves as the focal point of the narrative The Faithful Spy, which describes his experiences in life. Dietrich fought several fights, but the one with himself was the most difficult. Among the difficult choices Dietrich must make is whether to flee World War II and abandon his family or stay with them and work to overthrow Hitler. The Faithful Spy features several conflicts, including those between the Reich Church and the Confessing Church, the conspiracy against Hitler, and personal sacrifice. There were numerous conspiracies in Germany to assassinate Hitler during World War Two. All of them had the same objective—to kill him. Dietrich was related to many people in different conspiracies. The first plot to kill Hitler was called Operation Flash. The plan was to sneak a bomb on Hitler's plane on his way home from the eastern war front. It would have a delayed fuse and go off while in the air, making it seem like a plane malfunction. This attempt took place on March 13, 1943, but the attempt failed and Hitler landed safely at home. The bomb was working, but when the plane rose to such high altitudes and got cold, it caused the bomb's detonator to stop working, and the bomb did not go off. The second attempt on Hitler's life would only be two weeks after the first. On March 21, 1943, he and some of his Generals would be in Berlin to look at captured weapons from Russia. This attempt was very different from the last; it was a suicide mission, a brave soldier named General Rudolf-Christoph Freiherr von Gersdorff would have two bonds fastened on the inside pockets of his jacket. While he was giving the tour to Hitler, the plan changed and Hitler left early. He did make it to the bathroom in time to turn the detonator off so he did survive. This is something that Dietrich struggled with throughout the entire story. In the story, Dietrich gets an opportunity to go to New York City and teach. He does this to escape Germany and the war, but he can't help but have a gut feeling that he is doing the wrong thing by leaving his family and friends behind. He gets a sign from God telling him to go back to Germany after only being in America for 26 days. The second example of personal sacrifice is when he was in prison. In prison, he had a guard that he befriended, and they had a plan to escape, something that Dietrich struggled with throughout the entire story.
