“The Family” was founded in 1967, in San Francisco on the Spahn Ranch. The driving force behind Manson was hard to prove and hard to believe. Although Manson knew he had a plan of what he needed to do. When the Beatles recorded the album “The White Album, “Manson listened to it and started believing that it was speaking to him thru the lyrics. He also started believing that the song was speaking to him across the oceans. He saw the Beatles as the four angels and was saying the end of the world was coming. This cult lasted from 1966-1970. In the 1960s, Manson began a hippie cult group known as “The Family” with whom he talked into killing people for him. Manson had such a strong influence on the impressable young followers. Manson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to a 16 year old Kathleen Madden. She ran away from home at age fifteen and spent the next several years drinking, drugs, and several trips to jail. Since his mother couldn’t take care of him, Charles stayed with relatives, reform schools and boys homes. When he turned nine, he had already started stealing cars and burglary. When Manson reached his middle teens, his life was pretty much the same as his late childhood, either in jail or escaping from reform schools. When out of jail he lived on his own while robbing business and driving stolen cars. Charlie claimed that he had been raped constantly, and soon escaped because no one believed him. Then in 1951, he had moved from state to state committing his crimes and soon was caught driving a stolen car over state lines. Then the next year, he married Rosalee Wells, a waitress which they had a son together, born March 1956. Even while married, Manson was making extra money by stealing cars and stealing checks out of mailboxes. On April 1956, Manson once again was sentenced to prison. His wife of just a year, had found someone new and divorced Manson in June 1957. Then in 1958, Manson was released from prison. He began pimping and stealing checks and conning young women out of money. He soon got married to a prostitute named Candy Stevens and had a son. Then on June 1, 1960, he was sent to prison off of the Coast of Washington. His wife soon divorced him. Manson spent six years in prison this time. This is where he met up with Alvin “creeper” Karpis, member of the “Ma Barker Gang,” Karpis began teaching Manson how to play the steel guitar. Manson became obsessed with writing songs and playing guitar. He wrote music all the time and starting to sing. He befriended Terry Melcher, when he thought Melcher was going to advance his music career, but nothing happened and Manson was upset. During this time, Manson and some of his follower’s moved to the Spahn ranch, located Northwest of San Fernando Valley. The Spahn Ranch had been a movie set for westerns in the 1940s and 1950s.
