The Farm Security Administration: Essay
In 1933, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created and signed a document that was part of his New Deal plan called “The Farm Security Act” to help struggling farmers during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. This plan helped farmers financially by giving business opportunity and money to the smaller farms and farmers. During the Great Depression, the entire United States was going through a very difficult time, hence the name “Great Depression.” The stock market crashed on October 29, 1929 and the economy was in shambles for years as a result. Many people didn’t have jobs and had little or no money. People struggled in the most basic ways to provide for themselves due to a lack of work and many lived far below their previous standard of living. Franklin Roosevelt signed a plan called the Farm Security Act to help and aide poor rural farmers during the Great Depression. Many people had no form of communication or knowledge of the situation outside of their home. This is why the government sent out photographers and writers to be able to inform the rest of the country of what was going on around them. The pictures are of people and their families, showing us how hard and difficult their lives were during the Great Depression. These pictures depict pain, agony, poverty, depression, and despair. These pictures relate to the novel because the story was taking place during the Great Depression, and the Farm Security Act was part of restoring the country. Harper Lee must have included these pictures in “To Kill a Mockingbird” to tell a story and describe to the reader the situations of people at the time the story took
