Take a moment and close your eyes. Imagine waking up on an average day to find your entire universe crumbling before you. Piper Davis was just an ordinary pre-teen girl that had everything. An affectionate family, protection from the cold, a roof over her head, and just an overall amazing life. However, life back in the 1940s was very different from present day.
One day her older brother Hank got recruited to go to war as a Naval officer. Nowadays, teens being drafted into war is almost unprecedented. In the US when you're eighteen years old, you may have to sign a waiver, but back when Piper's brother got drafted, he was just one of the unfortunate ones pulled out of the hat.

In todays society people get so frustrated and worked up about uncomplicated things like social media. In Pipers era, social media did not affect daily life. Individuals could not simply post a status update and inform everyone on the fact that their fine.
Throughout the novel, Piper mailed multiple letters alternating between the Naval base and her household. What frightened me about that era was the fact that if her brother happened to neglect writing back, then his family would desperately await a reply. With today's technological advances, we are able to text or call our relatives in war, thus creating an easy way to keep in touch.
Although her brother was not communicating vigorously with her family the entire time, Piper was strong throughout the entire ordeal. Not only did she stand up for what she believes in, she did not let the small things get to her. Right now in the 21st century, bullying is a well discussed topic. When people began bullying the American-Japanese in this novel it made me very upset. Not only could that be considered an extreme form of racism, it was also not called
