Compare and Contrast - Fahrenheit 451 and The 5th Wave Section One: Introduction Fahrenheit 451 and The 5th Wave are dystopian novels that are written by brilliant authors that capture the emotions of the characters to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Themes and symbols are both present within the novels and allow these stories to be similar while also making the stories different. Comparing and Contrasting these novels will allow us to appreciate the spectacular writing and notice many similarities that we may have not noticed before. In the quote from The 5th Wave, “I lit up after you pulled out the implant. The eyepieces don’t pick up infestations. They react when there’s no implant” (Yancey 308). This line in The 5th Wave states that the Others tricked the humans into killing their own species. Some people's bodies were lit up green which was just a tracking device but Ringer thought the green meant that they were one of The Others. From this statement, we can conclude that Ringer’s own paranoia killed many innocent humans, lowering the population even more. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag was very paranoid because he did not know what to believe after he met Clarisse. Although Montag’s paranoia didn’t cause other people to get hurt, he was still struggling to make decisions. In The 5th Wave, a main theme is to trust no one. This is a theme relevant to the book because the Others disguised themselves as humans and this was kept as secret for a big portion of the story. When it was revealed, Cassie lost her trust and was in a state of shock. An example in the story would be when Evan, Cassie’s love interest, was revealed to be an Other. This event shows that anybody can be an Other so in order to survive you can’t trust anybody. A main theme in Fahrenheit 451 is that the crowd may not be right. Before Clarisse, Montag followed what everybody else was doing and was practically brainwashed and controlled by the government. Once Clarisse was introduced, Montag realized that everything about the town he lived in was twisted. He realized that what everybody else was doing is wrong and the opposite of what life should be like. This can be related to the theme of The 5th Wave because Montag couldn’t trust what anybody said because they are brainwashed just like what he used to be.
