You've heard of Dracula, the vampire who sucks humans' blood to death, and you've heard of the apocalypse, where the world is basically ending. Would you ever think these two completely different things have the same characteristics? Well, I'm going to show you in the passages, "Dracula", by Bram Stoker, and "Station Eleven", by Emily St. John Mandel, show how these two authors' use of sensory details helps create the mood. The two passages have similar moods because of their similarities in sensory details, but they also have differences between them. Some moods portrayed in the passages by the sensory details were ominous, edgy, and creepy.

Killers of the Flower Moon, by David Grann, follows the investigation of a series of murders in the Osage Nation reservation in Oklahoma during the 1920s. The Osage had gathered immense wealth from hidden oil reserves under their land. Many non-Osage wanted to leech off this wealth and take it for themselves. A plot to systematically eliminate prominent members of the Osage Tribe was uncovered, with William Hale at its center.
The irony the author A.C.H Smith values as a literary device in Labyrinth is using it to create suspense. To start, there are examples of verbal irony. Verbal irony is a figure of speech in which the speaker says the exact opposite of what she or he means. Here are some examples of verbal irony. To begin with, Hoggle says to Jareth “I am taking her to the beginning of the Labyrinth.”

“The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, “Good Country People” by Flannery O'Connor, and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson all have very strong themes that depict a darker side of human nature. All are very different in plot, but are connected through their endings. They all start with seemingly normal characters who end up doing things that would not have been predicted. In “The Veldt” it shows children revolting against their parents. “The Lottery” shows a whole community turning against one person.
“A Rose for Emily” is a unique short story that keeps the reader guessing even though its first sentence already reveals the majority of the content. William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is the epitome of a work that follows an unconventional plot structure and a non-linear timeline, but this method of organization is intentional, as it creates suspense throughout the story. William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” follows an unusual plot structure, which creates an eccentric application of suspense to a short story. Throughout the story, there are no clear indications of standard plot structure in each section, such as intro, climax, and denouement. Instead, there are sections, which are not in chronological order, that describe a particular conflict or event, which in turn creates suspense, as each conflict builds upon each other to make the reader question the overall context and organization of the story.
There are many young individuals that struggle with their own identity and individuality. Many of them have a hard time coping to figure out who they are and want to be. When a parent is raising a child they teach them their own set of morals and beliefs. In the short story “The Glass Roses” written by Alden Nowlan it shows the struggles of a fifteen year old boy who is trying to live up to his father’s expectations to make him proud.
Alice Walker the author of the Flowers”, was inspired to write this story because of the tragedy that has happened to multiple black Americans and how it has affected their human rights. This story describes scenery that may have happened around South America starting off with a girl named Myop, a ten-year old girl who explores the world around her, unaware of the secrets the world beyond holds. In the first paragraph, Alice Walker clearly emphasises Myops purity and young innocence with the quote “She skipped lightly from hen house to pigpen.” This demonstrates how happy Myop is in this setting, we can identify she feels safe here, “ She felt light and good in the warm sun.”
Throughout the entire novel, the author’s use of literary devices is very clear. These literary devices, specifically similes and personification, help the reader get a better idea of the exact sounds and feelings which will allow them to know what it feels like to be there in that moment. “ I stood there, trying to think of a comeback, when suddenly, I heard a whooshing sound, like the sound you get when you open a vacuum-sealed can of peanuts. Then the brown water that had puddled up all over the field began to move. It began to run toward the back portables, like someone pulled the plug out of a giant bathtub.
Everyone knows that suspense is a fundamental part of a storyline. It makes the reader keep on reading by filling them with anxious anticipation of what will happen next. In And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, the ten main characters go through a time of immense stress. After being invited to an island by a mysterious unknown millionaire, they realize that something is not quite right; their host hasn 't shown up. Each of them starts dying.
In the short story “The Flowers”, Alice Walker sufficiently prepares the reader for the texts surprise ending while also displaying the gradual loss of Myop’s innocence. The author uses literary devices like imagery, setting, and diction to convey her overall theme of coming of age because of the awareness of society's behavior. At the beguining of the story the author makes use of proper and necessary diction to create a euphoric and blissful aura. The character Myop “skipped lightly” while walker describes the harvests and how is causes “excited little tremors to run up her jaws.”. This is an introduction of the childlike innocence present in the main character.
Alice Walker uses imagery and diction throughout her short story to tell the reader the meaning of “The Flowers”. The meaning of innocence lost and people growing up being changed by the harshness of reality. The author is able to use the imagery to show the difference between innocence and the loss of it. The setting is also used to show this as well.
The book “ The Sun and Her Flowers” written by Rupi Kaur. The book is a poetry book which consist of five segments in the book including; Wilting, Falling, Rooting, Rising, Blooming. The book is based around love and the authors experience with it and the ups and downs to it. The author also brings in her experiences with love written in the style of poetry.
Imagery, syntax, and irony are all used to create this horrific story. Jackson vividly describes the day in which this story takes place giving it a specific date, and describing it as a nice and full-summer day where “the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green” (539). Imagery helps to set a positive mood, and suspend reality to draw the reader into the story. The syntax evolves over the course of the story as the tone of the story changes. The story starts off with longer descriptive
“The deeper voice rolls over it, obliterates it. Like thunder rolling across the sky.” Joyce Carol Oates’ use of descriptive words, and the comparison to the thunder rolling across the sky, reveals Reid’s true power when he gets angry.
