World War I was one of the most disastrous wars in history. There were 38 million casualties throughout the war and 17 million deaths. The war took place between 1914 and 1918. It was denominated a World War because although not every country was involved, a majority of them were. In addition, numerous countries from all around the world would not get involved without strong, valid reasons. Therefore, many causes made countries get involved. The four main causes of the war were militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism; and they are what sparked many countries all over the globe, and they urged them to get involved in World War One. There were multitudes of secret alliances and treaties during the war, and the involvement of one country was quickly accompanied by the entanglement of another country as well. Alliances are mutual groupings of people or countries that believe in the same thing, support the same cause, or are somehow related to one another. For example, Austria Hungary had an alliance with Germany. So when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Germany had to step in and defend Austria-Hungary when Russia declared war on them. Also, because of all of the different alliances every country had a different perspective on who had actually initiated the war. Most of the countries had blamed the war on Germany when it was in fact instigated by Serbia when Serbians assassinated Austria-Hungary's archduke Franz Ferdinand. The two most substantial alliances were the triple alliance, and the triple entente. The triple alliance was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Imperialism is the thought and execution of expanding a powerful country’s cultural, religious, and influence being forced upon a weaker country. Lots of different countries all over the world were industrializing and imperializing trying to expand their power and impact on others. This caused many problems because areas of land were being constantly fought over because different countries both thought they owned the same portion of land. It is a very important cause to the war because it created a buildup of tension throughout the entire planet which lead to the war which proves that imperialism was an incredibly significant element regarding World War
