Cause(s) of WWI Over many decades, there have been thousands and almost millions of reasons for what caused World War 1. Some say it was the only assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary or the European expansion alone. Furthermore, there is not just one factor that led to the cause of World War 1, yet possibly three. In simple terms, the causes of World War 1 are militarism, nationalism, and alliances.
He was assassinated by a group of Serbians who were desperate for Serbia to be the best. This secret group thought that by killing the Archduke, they could restore Serbia to its former glory because the Austria-Hungary empire had destroyed Serbia and everything it stood for. Instead of restoring Serbia, it launched an all out war. The alliances that the European countries had with each other (Triple Entente and Triple Alliance) really made this event a bigger deal than it actually was. All of this was caused by over eager patriots who really wanted their country to be the absolute best.
He was murdered by a Serbian nationalist who's last name was Princip. Princip was done eating a sandwich and the Archduke’s driver took a wrong turn that went right to Princip and he was able to kill Archduke. This led to Hungarian-Austria alliance to attack Serbia-Russian alliance which led to the Great War. they wanted to kill Archduke because they didn’t believe in what he was trying nto accomplish, or what his uncle was doing before Archduke stepped in. World war 1 was very inevitable for that reason.
In June 1914, a Serbian-nationalist terrorist group called the Black Hand sent groups to assassinate the Archduke. World War I occurred between July 1914 and November 11, 1918. By the end of the war, over 17 million people would be killed including over 100,000 American troops. The reason why war erupted is actually much more complicated than a simple list of causes. While there was a chain of events that directly led to the fighting, the actual root causes are much deeper and part of continued debate and discussion.

Nationalism is extreme patriotic feelings and beliefs over one’s own nation that shows a feeling of superiority over other nations, nationalism in Europe goes as far back as 1789 with the French Revolution but was spread further from The Napoleonic Wars in the early nineteenth century.
