The underlying causes of the World War I were militarism, nationalism, and imperialism. Militarism, the glorification of the military, was one of the major causes of World war I. People thought that the military was important to civilians and should be respected and glorified. It was an arms race. The more one nation built its militaries, the more the other nations felt that they had to do the same. According to the graph The Growth in Armaments, Germany had one of the greatest armament increases.

During the 1800’s and early 1900’s, there was many causes that led to the start of the first world war. Although many suggest that nationalism impacted the most, i think imperialism was the main cause of WW1. Everybody wants to be the biggest and to be the best and that's why these countries were thirsty for war. They were all in for getting more land and getting bigger. Powerful nations teamed up due to tensions arising from nationalism and land disputes that would later cause every European country to inevitably join the war. At the start of the century, tensions between powerful European nations were at an all-time high. Germany as one, did not feel as they deserved the lack of respect they were given. Germany was motivated to became as powerful as Great Britain and to become a powerful industrial empire.
