The Gilded age was a book that was written in 1873 by Mark Twain.It portrayed the features and charachteristics of the time period, in Washington DC. It talked about the greedy and corrupt politicians and businessmen of the time period. It was not until the 1920-30’s that the term “The Gilded Age” was used to describe that era because that was when there was a large growth in social protest.The term Gilded can be defined as a nice covering (usually gold) for something of lower value.This is a very good way to describe the age due to the corruptness of the time. These Ideas of hard work and perseverance maximized the efficiency of production. Because of all of the industrialization and immigration some problems began to emerge including, the crowding of urban areas,unequal wealth, and unemployment due to better machines or manufacturing techniques. Due to the stratifying class levels many new immigrants fell into lower levels of the wealth pyramid. This caused ethnic neighborhoods where people of the same social class, economic, status, and ethnicity lived in one area and sometimes not in the greatest conditions. One of the biggest and most Symbolic Industries of this time period was the railroad. It helped people get around. It also helped food and other goods around the country. Hayes. He came into office in 1877 and only served one term which lasted until 1881. During the election of 1876 Rutherford B. Hayes was the republican candidate and he had 165 to tilden’s(democrat) 184 electoral votes. You needed at least 185 votes to become president and there were 20 votes being disputed over. A select committee was called to decide who would be awarded the 20 votes. The committee consisted of seven democrats,seven republicans and one Independent. But the one independent could not attend and he was replaced by a republican(corruption of a republican house?). This means Hayes wins but they still must pay tilden to secede. And they must compromise creating the hayes tilden act Which called for: all troops to leave the south, a democratic southerner must be appointed to the cabinet and that the gov’t will repay the bill to rebuild the south(http://www.britannica.com/biography/Rutherford-B-Hayes). Right off the bat Hayes was making bad judgement calls. When Hayes agreed to removing all the troops from the south he was leaving all the blacks to become enslaved again. He thought that because the southern states said they would protect the blacks all would go well. When the troops left from the south the african americans for the most part were in poverty.Most of them were trapped in what is now known as sharecropping.
