How many freedoms would you give up to live in a peaceful community? In Lois Lowry’s The Giver people sacrifice all their freedoms for a peaceful community. The book is about Jonas, a 12 living in a repressive community, who finds out that old people are “released” also known as killed, unhealthy infants are released, and intruders are released as well. Jonas figures out that his little brother Gabriel, is soon to be released. Jonas, because of this, decides to take Gabriel and leave. Lowry creates a community where arranged marriages are required, there is no color, they can’t choose their jobs, and they have no sexual desire. All of this is done to maintain a peaceful community. Personal freedom is a greater pleasure than a peaceful community.

How would it feel to live in a loveless world? In The Giver, there is no love. They take pills that cancel their sexual desire, and they have arranged marriages. “I liked the feeling of love,' [Jonas] confessed.'I wish we still had that,' he whispered. 'Of course,' he added quickly, 'I do understand that it wouldn't work very well. And that it's much better to be organized the way we are now. I can see that it was a dangerous way to live.' (Pg. 126). This symbolizes the fact that they want love, but agree that an orderly society is more important. It is our minds natural instinct to love people. In our society today, there are many things revolving around the idea of love, such as marriage, and dating, our society would fall if you just took that away. I think the line between love and an orderly society is definitely leaning toward love because love is just too important to give
