Compare and contrast essay By sarah gore Society today is much different from the utopian society of The Giver. The friction between reality and perfection can decide the way in which societies make decisions. While these societies continue to strive to be like a utopian society, the ideal perfect society can lead to many problems in the long run. As I come to think of all the differences between these two societies, this quote from The Giver stands out to me, p.154 “it's just that…without the memories, it’s all meaningless.” For example, in our society, we have libraries with every book on every subject you can imagine; in The Giver, they get a very small selection of three. Memories are important in this period of time, so we can look back on the things we have or the society has gone through. We need these memories to create history and/or to educate others. Throughout the time of my life, I've gotten a pretty good understanding of the idea of memories. The words on page 165 gave me a better understanding; “The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. Life without color, pain or past.” For example, if we were to have no color in our society, it would be very unusual, but for the society in The Giver, they would have no problem with it because it is normalized, and they don't know what it's like to not live in a perfect society.
