Could you live in a world where everything was the same, and there was no color, no emotion, and no love? In which everything was the same? In the book The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, the theme of sameness is proven by the symbols of ribbons, the color red, and Gabriel. The book is about a community where everything is the same and chosen for you by the government. Jonas, a 12 year old boy, is mentored by a man called the giver, who teaches him how to look at memories from the past. Jonas decides to release the memories he received upon the population of his community, in an effort to end the sameness.
The first piece of evidence that proves the theme of sameness is the control the government has over every aspect of a person’s life. The first piece of evidence for this argument is the symbol of ribbons, which young girls wear until the age of nine (14) . Ribbons and other clothes represent acceptance. One argument for the theme of sameness it that the government squashes all differences, supported by the memories, the job of the receiver, and what Gabriel symbolizes. Another argument is that all emotion and love are taken away so that there is no difference in their society. This is supported by the memory of the war game, the love that Jonas feels in a special memory, and the symbol of the color red. A final piece of proof to support the theme is the control that the government has over your life, shown by children that you are assigned, the fact that all children grow older together, and the symbol of the color red.
