In “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls you will find out how memory can play a huge part in our lives and how your perspective can change your whole idea on something. To start off, I do not believe that Jeannette Walls’ memoir is totally accurate. I think that most of it has a truth behind it, but I feel like some of it is made up. For instance, in an article it says, “The average age of earliest memory is about 3.5 years,” while Jeannette talks about how she remembers burning herself while cooking hotdogs when she was three (Eacott). For example, you may believe something is true for many years but once you realize that it’s untrue it could change your perspective. One example of this is if you have a pet that died but your parents told you that it ran away. This would upset you but when you finally find out that it actually died it would devastate you, because something that was meant to protect you may hurt you in the long run. You may also remember something one way while other people remember it a different way and then you can create drama over that. I just feel like you can almost live your life off of memories and once you find out that they are different than what you originally thought it could change your whole view on that. In an article it even states, “that some people report false memories, confusing events that they remember with those they have merely been told about or imagined.” (Eacott). I’ve had this happen to me where I’ve had an extremely realistic dream when I was younger and then when I say something to my parents they tell me that it never really happened.
