Taylor Grayson English Honors Period 1 Peller Task # 1: The Glass Castle Throughout their lives , every member of the Walls family experienced hardships. Though Jeannette and her three other siblings endured abuse both physically and mentally throughout their childhood, the peculiar ways in which both her mentally unstable parents showed their love and guidance ultimately helped to form these children and shape them into the individuals they are today. While Rex Walls, Jeannette’s alcoholic yet genius father, promised that he would one day create a house for the family made out of glass, his skills in mathematics and science unfortunately were not enough to battle his issues with alcohol and his inability to provide for his family.
“The Glass Castle” is a biography, drama written by Destin Daniel Cretton; it portrays a young girl (Jeanette Walls) and her family as they struggle in poverty stricken towns with a mother who is an eccentric artist and her alcoholic father who she blindly puts her faith in. The film was released on August 11, 2017 and features Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts among others. The big question, “What do I think about “The Glass Castle” film? The film was dissatisfying overall, I did not feel same emotional attachment that I felt with the book. They did not show enough of Jeanette and Rex’s connection to each other.
What defines a good parent? What defines a bad one? To what point do these terms become subjective? The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls Illustrates the impact that parents have on their children and how nomadic life does as well. The Glass Castle follows Jeanette's experience with nomadism and tells how it shaped who she is and how the members of her family molded her into who she is today.
Jeannette Walls, successful social figure and journalist, is on her way to a fancy New York City party. Looking out the window of a taxi, she watches a homeless woman dig through trash cans. She realizes sadly that It's her mother. Jeannette realizes this could be her and she tells us the story of how she got to where she is, sitting in a luxury car, while her mother Rose Mary is literally in the gutter.

The following passage epitomizes the Walls’ lifestyle, Jeanette's parent’s teaching mantra being, “If you don’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim.” This attitude towards life reminds me of when Rose Mary says, “Suffering is good for the soul” earlier in the story. In this scene in particular, Rex Walls attempts teaching Jeannette how to swim. However, he takes a different approach than most parents would, continually pushing her away from him, and allowing her to thrash around in the waters, drowning until he brought her back to the shallow end of the spring. Although a memorable section of the text, this wasn’t the only occurrence where the parenting of the Walls’ bordered neglect.
Parents have a profound influence on shaping their children’s personalities through their attitudes and actions. This is because children spend a substantial portion of their formative years under their parent’s care and guidance. During this period, they observe and interact with their parents, internalizing various behaviors, beliefs, and values that mold their character. This concept is clearly illustrated in the memoir The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls. This memoir depicts the author’s unconventional upbringing with their parents, Rex and Rosemary.
Extended out to most children is the hand of a parent offering a warm hug along with warnings of danger to their children. This is what any fit parent would do. However this is not always the case with all parents. For example in the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary and Rex Walls are not fit to be parents because they don’t give their children what they need and have an unstable relationship. Jeannette and her siblings live off of what their parents can afford when they have sufficient money but they don’t use it to give them what they need.
Dreams, contrary to popular belief, are terrible. The best thing to do, is to stop chasing dreams because all dreams do is distract people from more important responsibilities. People spend their time chasing their dreams, but they don’t perform their day to day tasks they need to survive on their own. In the memoir, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Jeannette’s mother, Rose Mary, has a dream of becoming an artist. Instead of getting a job to provide for her poverty stricken family, she decides to stay home and paint all day.
In this world, there’s learning things the hard way and the easy way; in Jeannette Wall’s world, there’s only learning things the hard way. The Glass Castle is an adventurous story that reveals the painfully miserable story of Jeannette Walls. A selfish mother, a careless father, and terrible social encounters- these are some of the elements of a harsh reality Rex and Rose Mary Walls failed to shield their children from. Growing up poor was already difficult, but growing up with a selfish parent, specifically an unfeeling mom, made life hell for the Walls children. The family barely had one source of income from Rex Walls, and instead of helping out with the family’s finance issues, Rose Mary spent her days at home painting.
“Life’s too short to care about what other people think” (Jeannette Walls). It is good to not care what other people think, so stay true in life and live it to the fullest. The book, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, is a memoir that tells the story of Jeannette’s difficult family and her poor living conditions, that cause life to be difficult for her. She struggles to move past all the hardships in life and she learns how to overcome the majority of them, so she can develop into her own person. Even though her family can be a little peculiar, they possess a strong bond with each other and they always seek to help one another out.

Stephen King was born in 1942 during the post World War II of United States history. This age influenced King throughout his life, especially in writing.
" Harvey 's dream" by Stephen King is the story about a man that dreams about a horrible accident; a dream that might end up being a reality. The meaning of the story is to never underestimate a dream, because dreams might end up becoming a reality. The point that the author tries to make to the reader is to evaluate the elements of one 's dreams, and determine what our subconscience put there, and what is simply an element of our imagination. The theme of the story is mystery; inside the mystery we can find elements of sadness, unhappiness, and fear. There are two main characters in which one is Harvey, the husband who is telling the dream, and the other is Janet, the wife, who is listening to the dream.

Stephen King is a university of Maine graduate, he graduated with a B.S. in English and a minor in dramatics. King has several major achievements for his literary masterpieces. King is most known for writing novels, short stories and screenplays; not many people know about the children’s book he published.
The topic of abortion often acts as a magnet, polarising an argument, and rather than picking direct sides, people’s responses will fall on a spectrum from “Pro-life” to “Pro-choice”, often not picking one over the other. Even people who say they support the same idea, say feminism, can support either side and use their shared an idea to support opposing arguments. With all the discussion of abortion, people on both sides can see arguments made by opposition. In most US states, abortions are legal, but people who get them are still seen with a stigma, and some governments who have approved of apportions in their states build needless opticales making it harder to get one.
