The Gloomy World of Edgar Allan Poe Where does the mind wander when reading the classic works of Edgar Allan Poe?. What imagery can be depicted while engaging in such writing?. The word “Nevermore” by it’s own nature captivates an audience allowing readers to step inside a melancholic world. Poe takes colorful dreams and paints them grey with his dreary writing style and dark words. Two poems which display these traits heavily are “Alone” and “The Raven”. These classic poems tell a story of both sorrow and despair. Each poem showcases similar characteristics through setting and meaning but, ultimately one stands out more to an audience through using more descriptive detail. This emphasizes why “The Raven” and “Alone” by Edgar Allan Poe each represent similar setting and emotional writing styles however, “The Raven” in essence becomes more easily understood by a general audience …show more content…

Poe begins the narration for “The Raven” describing “Once upon a midnight dreary…” (Poe/1). Within the first line the reader understands the surroundings within the poem and can establish grim undertones presented through-out the poem itself.
