Gavin Ward Mrs.Klock English 11R 29 May 2024 Great Gatsby Critical lens Essay. Writer Paulo Coehlo once said “...love is an untamed force. When we try to control it, it destroys us”. This quote means that love is not trainable, and when attempted, it will destroy you. This is true, this is proven true in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book “The Great Gatsby”. It is shown through the conflict between Gatsby and Tom, as well as the situational irony of Myrtle's death. Throughout “ The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott. Fitzgerald uses conflict between Gatsby and Tom to prove love cannot be trained and will destroy those who try. Gatsby states, ‘She never loved you, do you hear?’ he cried. ‘She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me.. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me!’”( Fitzgerald 130).
