Kelsi Maher English Essay Literary Analysis #3 A sorrowful story that is shielded by glamor is one way to describe this story. From the many parties and extravagant riches that are told about; to the emotional heartbreaks. A tragic hero type of story is told from a man that must witness this selfish world. Jay Gatsby and his story is full of colors. There are many bright and uplifting colors, but there is also the envious and desolate colors for the sad truth in the story. For example, the golden life that Gatsby has obtained. Also, the green that stands for jealousy and the white that is honorable. In the end the many colors show many different symbols in the story. A color that is used the most in the story is gold. This could stand for the richness of the characters. Also the way people view others can be represented by gold. "I put my arm around Jordan's golden shoulder" said Nick (page 77). Jordan Baker is also known as the “Golden girl of golf”. Sometimes the gold at Gatsby's house turns to a yellow color. Thus the richness is only a cover, since we learn in the story that Gatsby’s rich past is a lie and that made up a lie to not be shunned by the community and Daisy. For Jay Gatsby, green could stand for hope. It could also stand for an envious feeling. Across the sea there is a green light at the Buchanan’s house that Gatsby can be seen staring at. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us" (p. 171). There is something with the green light that makes Gatsby seem jealous, as he longed to be with Daisy. A kinda way that he is close to being with Daisy, but at the same time so far away and almost impossible to be with her.
