The American Dream: Survival or Death Less than twenty percent of Americans feel like they are living any part of the American Dream ( Carter ). In the history of the United States of America, the American Dream has been debated many times. But in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott. Fitzgerald; Fitzgerald illustrates the death of the American Dream. Having a family and a house is just one of many things that might be included in people's American dream. Getting married is one accomplishment most Americans make. In the Book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott. Fitzgerald, we see many married couples. One of those couples is Tom and Daisy Buchanan. They have a beautiful house in West Egg. So you could say they are achieving the American dream in some way. But, if you look deeper into their life you will see that is not the truth. In the book The Great Gatsby, we see Tom cheating multiple times. Even though the American dream differs from person to person. Part of the debate is where your money comes from. If you would inherit money you would just be one of the lucky people to do that. But if you were to work your way up through the workforce you would become a self-made man. The majority of people would say that being a self-made man is more of an accomplishment than being born into wealth. In F.Scott. Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby the main character Gatsby is known to be a complacent man. Nick says, “ He was left with his singularly appropriate education; the vague contour of Jay Gatsby had filled out to the substantiality of a man” ( Fitzgerald 101).
