The Great Gatsby, Empathy The Great Gatsby, chapter one is a very important chapter in the book. This chapter introduces the concept of Empathy. Not only the first chapter but the first paragraph shows the use of empathy in a major way. In the sentence the narrator's father tells him in a way to not judge people because everyone has had different advantages. The way the father is telling this brings Empathy to not only the narrator but the reader as well. He is showing his son through words how to not only show empathy but to truly feel it. There are more than just one quote showing the use of empathy in this chapter, for example “ Something was making him nibble at the edge of stale ideas as if his sturdy physical egotism no longer nourished his peremptory heart.” The Great Gatsby pg 14, this shows the narrator's empathy for Tom.
