I don’t think Gatsby is great for many reasons, but the one reason that struck me the most was because he lies about his life. A person that is great shouldn’t have to lie about his life, he should be upfront and confident no matter what happened in the past. There is also the fact that he has obsession with the past and he has dream that he is always craving for, but can can never achieve. A great person should overcome fear and their past to better person. Also, Gatsby’s name isn’t even Gatsby its Gats. "If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay," said Gatsby. "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock." Gatsby always looks over at the dock to see that green light. At first I thought the green light meant Daisy, but now I think the green light means the American Dream. Gatsby looked at the green light and thought of Daisy, but to get Daisy he knew that he needed to be somewhere close, then become wealthy, and lastly he needed to make himself known (which is what every American wish could happen to them). He accomplished all that and then he get to Daisy through Nick. At first I thought all right the Gatsby has everything he wanted, but then realization came to me that he did all this because he was holding onto a glimpse of the past. Gatsby is like a fisherman every time he recalls that time with Daisy it gets better and better (When fishermen recalls story it becomes more and more exaggerated, thus making the story better). Then the other reason he wants Daisy is because she is of old money, and she is very wealthy. Gatsby doesn’t want Daisy for Daisy, he wants Daisy for what she is. If a “great” loves a person for what they than for who they are, then I wouldn’t want to meet a “great”
