Gatsby Living The American Dream Many people attempted to live the American Dream during the 1920’s and were often unsuccessful with it. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby faces the challenge of pursuing the American Dream. Throughout the novel the author gives a brief history of Gatsby’s early life leading up to his life later on. Originally “Jay Gatz”, started out poor and worked up to be a millionaire with a giant mansion and throwing big parties all the time. Many other characters in the novel don’t have the same commitment that Gatsby had. Gatsby was a poor man and worked on a boat to try and get money when someone offered him a job to help him. That job offered a lot of money for him. In the novel the Gatsby stated, “Dan Cody offered me a job on his boat… he bought me new sailor clothes and gave me money” (Fitzgerald 3).
