In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, titled The Great Gatsby, the theme of love plays an essential role in the main story. Jay Gatsby, the protagonist of The Great Gatsby, bases a lot of his life on the idea of love. Furthermore, this novel shows how people argue over someone they love. Ultimately, the theme of love in The Great Gatsby led to the death of Jay Gatsby and George Wilson. Firstly, Gatsby’s life in The Great Gatsby is largely centered around the idea of love. Gatsby wanted to marry Daisy Buchanan early on, but he was too poor for her. So, over the next few years, Gatsby based his actions on the idea that Daisy still loved him. One main climax in the middle of the novel is when Gatsby meets Tom and Daisy. During this time, Gatsby and Tom had gotten into a heated argument over who Daisy loved. During this argument, Gatsby stated, “‘Your wife doesn’t love you,’ said Gatsby. She’s never loved you. She loves me.’” Tom responds by calling Gatsby crazy and saying that Daisy loves him and that he loves her too, even if he cheats on her constantly. This argument further develops the plot by Daisy explaining how she loved both of them but stuck on Tom’s side of the argument. Ultimately, the theme of love caused this argument to arise and caused a large amount of turmoil and hurt feelings. Lastly, love was one of the direct causes of the death of Jay Gatsby and George Wilson. Daisy was driving home with Gatsby in his car one night when she hit and killed Myrtle Wilson. She then fled and did not tell anyone about what had occurred during that drive. So, being left in the dark about who had murdered his wife, George Wilson directs his anger toward Gatsby.
