Pity for The Great Gatsby Jay Gatsby, a man who found himself encased in wealth hiding from his past life as a lowly farmer from the Dakotas, found himself an inevitable demise of which one should feel pity for. In the book, The Great Gatsby, written by Fitzgerald, Gatsby was a very wealthy man who, although had enough money to buy the world, was not seen as a high class member of society. Coming from old money was the deciding factor in who is considered high class. Gatsby was not old money, in fact, he was very new money. He worked his way up from the shallow Midwest to living in the finest part of New York in his multi-million dollar mansion. But the day Gatsby arrived back to his home, he found not only was Daisy not waiting for him, but she had moved on entirely to a different man. Gatsby must have been crushed to find out while he was out risking his life, he was being stabbed by the girl he loved. With going off to war also comes a huge deal of traumatic stress, especially during World War 1, which had the highest death rate of any war on record. Not specifically mentioned, one can conclude that Gatsby must have been at least a little bit traumatized by war. This trauma he must have experienced could have altered the way he thinks. All he wanted was Daisy, and he was willing to wait and do anything he could to get her back. Coming back as a veteran and finding out he was abandoned would have been a huge, devastating blow to Gatsby and his sanity. This war hero, a man who got medals for fighting in the war, a famed hero, left by the person who he thought loved him. Ultimately, the chase down for Daisy would evidently lead to Gatsby’s death. If Daisy hadn’t left him in the first place, if Daisy had waited just like she promised, Gatsby would have been able to live out the rest of his life. His mistress, Myrtle, was tragically hit and killed by a car. The driver of the car was revealed to be Daisy, the girl Gatsby was after, driving Gatsby’s car. The husband of Myrtle, George Wilson, was devastated by the death of his wife. Tom ended up telling George that Gatsby was the one driving the car who hit and killed his wife. As previously established, a broken heart and trauma can have a massive impact on how a person can act towards other human beings. After being told Gatsby was the driver who killed Myrtle, George decided to make the decision to shoot Gatsby. One day while Gatsby was floating in his pool, George came up to him and shot him, killing him instantly, before then shooting himself. The pity here should be felt for Gatsby as we all know he was not the one driving the car. He was not the one who killed Myrtle. The one who killed Myrtle was Daisy, Tom’s wife, the girl Gatsby was after. Tom was angry at Gatsby for trying to steal his wife from him. He wanted revenge on Gatsby, and so that’s why he told George that Gatsby was the one who killed Myrtle. The actions of the broken heart of both George and Tom were what led to the death of Gatsby.
