Journal Response: Longing for the Past
I don’t think that there is much value in nostalgic longing as you’re always living in the past and not looking forward in your future. You will be chasing after something that’s long gone and can never be retrieved, instead of finding new things that can replace the past that you can’t forget and be better than anything you’ve experienced.
Living in the past and chasing after the past causes you to miss what you can grasp and control now, so in the future, you may regret what you’ve done or haven’t done now and try to get it back. This will become a bad cycle after a while when you want to get back the past in the moment, but in the future, because you lose something in that moment as you were trying to get back the …show more content…

Reality doesn’t sympathize anyone as it continues in its own way and doesn’t stop for anyone. Gatsby thinks he and Daisy can be where they were 5 years ago and that Daisy has only ever loved him, but reality slowly destroys his imagination and dream. Gatsby finds out that Daisy has also once loved Tom and she has a daughter with him. Gatsby still thinks that she is the same girl 5 years ago and has waited for him all his time. Daisy can’t meet his expectations and Gatsby’s dream falls apart. Daisy is not the same girl 5 years ago as before she may have loved him with all her life, but now Gatsby is not essential in her life anymore. Daisy can come and leave with her fortune to wherever she likes and when things go wrong, she can always start a new life elsewhere with all her money. Gatsby can’t see the fact that Daisy doesn’t need him like he needs her as he lives in the past and can’t accept that idea, so he can’t ever move on from her.
