Ever since I can recall, my Dad has emphasized an important philosophy and advises me to keep it in mind as I endure everyday obstacles and situations . Every once in awhile he will ask me, “Is your glass half empty or full?” This rhetorical question represents the perspective an individual has on a situation. Individuals that view a situation with the negative outcome in mind are said to have cups that are “half empty”. On the other hand, people who are considered to be optimistic in life would have cups that are half full. My father's philosophy is to always look at something with the glass full mindset. In others words look for the best out of something and be hopeful for the future. In the novel, "The Great Gatsby", F. Scott Fitzgerald represents many themes that are significant to the 1920’s as well as life today. One of Fitzgerald’s main themes in the novel is the presence of optimism and hopefulness. the main character Gatsby is portrayed as being optimistic, in spite of the adversity that he is faced with. However, this trait is eventually represented as a fault and leads to the downfall of his character. However, optimistic to a fault means that a person is optimistic even when it is clear that success will not be likely. Optimism is special quality to have, but unfortunately sometimes it is more useful to be more realistic about the possibility of failure. especially if failure is likely.
