Inspiration for initial ideas Through the initial planning of the story the concept was to expose the effects of war on civilians. I took inspiration through the people impacted by the Hiroshima bombings during WWII by reading firsthand accounts of the bombings and also the effects it had afterwards. Intended purpose The audience, this writing is focused on, are young adults specifically in modern times, who live with a life of considerable peace without war. My intended purpose of the story is a reminder towards the people about the effects of war. The ch story tries to elicit an emotional repose as the main warning of loss and devastation that evolving new technology could bring towards people. It reflects the idea about technology during the 1920’s Fitzgerald comments on throughout his book The Great Gatsby. Changes My initial concept was to base the story about the after effects of war however this changed towards the past of the people effected by the bombing instead. I changed the initial concept to this one as it would be easier to elicit an emotional response and connection to the audience. The last words spoken in the story are left without a character who said it. Throughout the story the protagonist follows the green light as it is a sign of hope through “the valley of ashes”. However, when he finally reaches the green light it is up to the audience to determine the ending. whether his mother spoke to the protagonist of the story, shortening the quote, removing the word “little” possibly seeing how the boy has grown through his hardships.
